VitalSource was founded in 1994 in San Antonio, Texas by Dr. Robert Todd Watkins, Jr. 

The company’s first commercial implementations kicked off in 2000 when the small group of dental schools piloted the use of an early course materials solution, DVDs that held full digital versions of each student’s entire four years of textbooks, workbooks, lectures slides, manuals, and handbooks. The digital curriculum was updated each semester and stayed with students after graduation as a professional resource.

In July 2006, the company was acquired by Ingram Content Group. VitalSource now acts as a subsidiary of Ingram Industries.

History

In June 2021, Ingram Industries sold VitalSource to Francisco Partners, a private equity group, for an undisclosed amount.

In 2019, the company partnered with Barne’s & Noble Education to expand access to and implement BNED’s “FirstDay” Inclusive Access program, which gives students access to course materials by or before the first day of class each term.

In August 2022, VitalSource began carrying Labster’s complete portfolio of science lab simulations.

VitalSource maintains a corporate office in Raleigh, North Carolina.

SweetWater Sound Corporate Office

Chuck Surack was tired of being a touring musician and founded the company in 1979 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The company originally offered recording services via a remote recording studio in Surack’s VW bus and another recording studio based out of his home.

 In 1985, to increase the services the recording studio could offer, Surack bought a Kurzweil K250 and became known for his custom sound library and programming skills as well as his upgrade kits.

History

By 1990, with six employees, the company expanded Sweetwater to become a retailer of musical instruments and pro audio equipment, with the recording studio continuing as an integral part of the business.

In October 2018, Sweetwater announced another expansion to construct a new warehousing facility.

Today, Sweetwater is the leading e-Commerce provider of musical instruments and audio gear.

In August 2022, Sweetwater opened its first distribution center outside of Indiana. The Phoenix, Arizona, Distribution center is 350,000 square feet of musical instruments and audio gear, including microphones, amplifiers, drums, and guitars.

 Bunim Laskin noticed that his neighbor’s pool was rarely used. He offered to pay for part of the upkeep and maintenance in exchange for using the pool when it wasn’t occupied.

This led Laskin to wonder how many other people would be interested in the same sort of exchange. Swimply was founded in 2018.

Swimply is an online marketplace where people who own pools can rent them by the hour, day, week, month, or longer.

History

Communication, selection of amenities, and payment are all handled through the Swimply platform. Hosts in the United States are covered by a $1,000,000 insurance policy.

Laskin appeared on the TV show Shark Tank in 2020 to pitch his idea for investment opportunities.

While Swimply experienced difficulties during the Covid pandemic, revenue increased more than 4,000 percent in 2021.

During heatwaves and hot summer vacations, renting a stranger’s pool seems like a good idea to many.

One client has earned $177,000 in the past two years renting out his pool on Swimply.

The city of Palm Springs, California, isn’t too keen on Swimply, since the city has banned people in the city from listing their pools on the app.

In 1973 Jess A. Bell Sr. created the first flavored lip balm in Strawberry, Lemon, and Green Apple flavors.

Bonnie Bell began manufacturing these lip balms under the Lip Smacker name in 1974, starting with the iconic Dr. Pepper flavored lip balm.

In 1987, the company began selling products internationally.

History

Lip Smackers makes lip balm in a variety of flavors, including most sodas (such as Dr. Pepper, Coke, and Sprite), along with fruit and candy flavors, such as Skittles.

In 1996, the company created a webpage and began selling its famous lip balm online. That same year, the company designed a top with a hole in them so lip balms could be attached to purses, key rings, backpacks, and gym bags.

In 2014, Swarovski partnered with Lip Smacker to produce three of their biggies, a larger version of a normal Lip Smacker, covered in over five hundred Swarovski crystals. The Swarovski Lip Smacker biggies are priced at $250 each, making them the most expensive lip product compared to the likes of MAC or Lancôme.

 In 2015, Buddy Bell sold the family brands, Lip Smacker and Bonne Bell to Markwins International.

All Lip Smacker products are made in the USA.

While the infamous Dr. Pepper lip smacker has been discontinued, other soda favors, including Vanilla Coke and Fanta are still being sold.

The company designs and manufactures midcentury modern furniture, specializing in sofas.

The furniture is often brightly colored, reasonably priced, and the company offers free shipping in most cases, making this an attractive option for many.

History

Originally an eCommerce company, JoyBird has since opened 8 showrooms in major US cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles.

All furniture is made in Tijuana, Mexico. There are no warehouses, furniture is made when a client places an order. Most items can be custom-made as well, such as changing the lounger on a sectional to be placed on the right side, rather than the left side, a sofa that is 6 inches longer than the one shown, or making the legs shorter or taller than what is considered standard.

The company will also email clients photos of their furniture as it is being constructed.

In June 2018, La-Z-Boy acquired JoyBird furniture for an undisclosed amount.

The Lovesac Company had filed a lawsuit against JoyBird furniture for patent infringement. In June 2022, both parties settled privately out of court, with the terms of the resolution being kept confidential.
