Shipley Do-Nuts was founded in 1936 by Lawrence Shipley, in Houston, Texas. Shipley spent a great deal of time perfecting what he believed was the perfect donut. The original price for a dozen donuts was 5 cents. By the 1940’s, the donuts had become to popular that the company began selling them in retail locations.

Today, Shipley Do-Nuts has 400 locations in 6 states, with plans to have 500 stores or more by the year 2020. What sets Shipley Do-Nuts apart from the rest are that the company not only bakes them fresh each day, they bake small batches so most customers will enjoy a hot, fresh donut that is minutes old, rather than hours old.

The company also offers a wide range of beverages including coffees, espresso, cappuccinos, and iced coffee drinks. Franchising began in the 1950’s. Shipley Do-Nuts also offers catering and pre-orders for large groups.

Slomin’s was founded in 1923 by Jacob Slomin in Seaford, New York. Slomin’s original store sold food and kerosene. Since many customers had difficulty carrying kerosene to their homes, Solmin began a delivery service.

History

Soon, the company was delivering home heating oil, gas, and home heating repair services. After the fuel deregulation of the 1980s, Slomin’s began to offer home security services.

Today, Slomin’s is the US’s largest privately owned security company. The company still offers gas equipment services, home heating systems, water heaters, and security services. Sloman’s also offers air conditioning service and electronic automation, which enables heating, cooling, and security units to be operated remotely.

Slomin’s offers service in 8 states, mainly in the mid-Atlantic region of the US.

In November 2023, a market research report stated that home alarm monitoring services, such as Slomin’s, were expected to have tremendous gains over the next 5 years.

Company headquarters are in Hicksville, New York.

Fannie May, which sells chocolate candies, was founded in 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, by H. Teller Archibald. The recipes have never been altered, even when some ingredients were hard to find during WWII. After the war, the company grew substantially, with more than 50 store locations in the early 1950’s.

History

The company purchased their largest competitor, Fanny Farmer, in 1992, making the company, at the time, the largest chocolate producer in America. However, in 2002, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy. The company was ultimately purchased by 1-800-Flowers.Com in 2006 for $85 million.

Today, Fannie May operates in 7 states and Canada, with approximately 100 locations. In addition to chocolates, the company also sells coffee, gifts, and a wide range of other chocolate dipped foods including apples and strawberries.

In March 2017, Ferrero, maker of Nutella, acquired Fannie May for $115 million.

In late 2020, Fannie May marked their 100th anniversary with newly remodeled stores.

The company maintains a corporate office in Hudson, Ohio.

Happy Hour at all locations is from 3 to 7PM, and the beer selection is quite large, but varies on location.

Godiva Chocolates

Godiva Chocolatier, commonly known as Godiva Chocolates, was founded in 1926 by Joseph Draps, in Brussels, Belgium. The company opened its second location in Paris in 1958, but these premium chocolates did not reach the US until 1966.

The company was purchased by Campbell Soup in 1967, but was sold in 2007 to Yildiz Holdings, who also own Ulker, a Turkish food manufacturing company ,for $850 million.

Today, the company has 450 locations worldwide, with boxed chocolates sold in most upscale department stores, as well as 6 or more catalogs mailed within the US each year. The company also operates a website and takes telephone orders.

History

Godiva Chocolates opened Cafe Godiva in London’s Harrod’s department store in 2012, where guests can enjoy pastries, chocolate beverages, and, of course, chocolate candy.
