SimpliSafe was founded in 2006 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Chad Laurans and his wife Eleanor. After several of their friends’ homes in Cambridge, Massachusetts, had been burglarized, this pair of Harvard Business School students decided to create their own alarm system that was easy to use, as well as affordable. Chad designed the system and had friends provide feedback regarding the units and operation.

History

Originally, the Laurans began working on the products in their living room between 2006-2008. In 2010, the company had annual revenue of $1.4 million. By 2013, it was $38.5 million.

Today, SimpliSafe has more than 300 full-time employees and the company states it has 300,000 clients. CNET listed SimpliSafe as one of their Editors’ Choice for home security systems. In 2014, the company took the #2 position on the Inc. 5000’s list of Fastest Growing Companies in America.

In 2016, SimpliSafe integrated with the NEST Learning Thermostat.

The basic SimpliSafe system is installed by clients and monitored both by the client via their smartphone or computer, as well as by a monitoring team.

In January of 2018, the company introduced a third-generation version of its product line. The updated sensors are half the size of the previous version and have twice the range. Earlier models worked on a cellular connection, while the new third-generation system runs off of both cellular and Wi-Fi. The company also announced plans to launch a video doorbell, smart lock, outdoor camera, as well as integration with Amazon’s Alexa system.

In February 2018, SimpliSafe said they had stopped offering a discount to members of the NRA in response to the school shooting in Florida.

Russell Stover was founded in 1921, but not as a candy store. Russell Stover and partner Christian Nelson actually created the first chocolate covered ice cream, known as Eskimo Pies. While extremely successful, other companies began making their own versions of Eskimo Pie. Stover sold his share in the company and moved to Colorado. Russell and his wife Clara used this money to start a new business, selling boxed chocolates.

Today, Russell Stover’s Candies is owned by Swiss chocolate maker Lindt & Sprugli. The company is one of America’s leading brand of chocolates, only behind Mars and Hershey’s. The company has three brands; Whitman’s, Russell Stovers, and Pangburn’s. Russell Stover brand candies are the largest sold, with more than 70,000 wholesale locations in more than 20 countries.

Approximately 60 percent of all boxed chocolates sold in the US come from the Russell Stover brand. The company also sells online and offers sugar free candy, as well as gift sets.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill Corporate Office

Carrabba’s Italian Grill was founded in 1986 in Houston, Texas by Johnny Carrabba and his uncle Damian Mandola. The company operates a chain of casual restaurants with Italian – American cuisine. As of December of 2015, there were 247 locations, with most of these being located in Florida.

In 1993, the company joined with Outback Steakhouse (now part of Bloomin’ Brands) to expand and add more locations to the company. Ten locations were opened in Texas and Florida. The two original locations in Houston still belong to the Carrabba family. Carrabba’s Italian Grill continues to expand and grow. In addition to the usual Italian dishes, the company offers a gluten free menu.

Many of the recipes used at Carrabba’s Italian Grill came from Mandola’s mother and his sister Rose. The company has headquarters in Tampa, Florida.

Bahama Breeze Island Grill, commonly called Bahama Breeze, was founded in 1996 by the Darden Restaurant Group. The company specializes in a chain of casual restaurants that offer Caribbean-style cuisine and fruity cocktails. There are currently 40 locations in 16 states in the US.

History

The company offers the usual burgers and fries, but its specialty is Caribbean-styled foods such as chicken and fried plantains, a variety of seafood platters, and empanadas. Most locations offer happy hour and live entertainment, usually on the weekends.

Bahama Breeze was involved in a racial discrimination lawsuit in 2009 after employees at the Beachwood, Ohio, location, claimed managers harassed black employees. In an out-of-court settlement, the company agreed to update its anti-discrimination policy, provide diversity training to its managers, and paid the plaintiffs $1.26 million.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic of 2020-2022, Darden Restaurants continues to open new locations.

Freebirds World Burrito, commonly called Freebirds, was founded in Santa Barbara, California, in 1987 by Mark Orfalea. Orfalea wanted to design a restaurant similar to El Pollo Loco and deliver menu items to students at Santa Barbara college. After discovering he had leftover chicken, his aunt suggested making them into burritos. The company name comes from a favorite song “Free Birds” by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The company offers Mexican style cuisine with a wide variety of fresh choices, sauces, and salsas. Restaurant locations are known for their ceilings painted like the sky and motorcycle theme, with the Statue of Liberty crashing through a wall in most locations. Currently, the company has 90 locations, most of them in Texas and California.

Freebirds World Burrito was sold in 2007 to Tavistock Restaurants and operates as a subsidiary of its parent company. The company moved its headquarters in mid-2015 from California to Austin, Texas.
