Huntington Learning Center was founded by Dr. Raymond Huntington and his wife, Eileen in 1977. The company operates a chain of tutoring and testing centers. The company expanded to a second location in 1978. Franchising began in 1985.

Today, Huntington Learning Center is one of the oldest and best known providers of educational tutoring and testing services in the US. In addition to the usual tutoring services, the company also offers tutoring and preparation for SAT testing, GED, ACT, and PSAT exams.

The company filed for bankruptcy in 2000, which forced the sale of some company locations. There are approximately 300 locations in 40 states as of 2015, 90 percent of which are franchise operations.

Fred Segal was founded in 1961 in West Hollywood, California by Fred Segal. The original store sold only jeans and was a small 33 square feet in size. Over the years, the store grew and added on. Managers were soon encouraged to start purchasing select fashion groups and creating their own stores within the store. Soon, these managers were operating a franchisees.

In 2012, SANDOW purchased the licensing rights to the Fred Segal name. In 2014. SANDOW and Fred Segal teamed up with Evolution Media Partners with plans for expansion.

Today, Fred Segal has expanded to 4 locations, 2 in the US, 1 in Tokyo, Japan, and 1 in Yokohama, Japan. The company also recently opened an eCommerce site so even those who can’t visit the locations can still purchase his clothing.

Sylvan Learning was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1979 by former teacher Barry Fowler. The company began offering franchises in 1983 and grew rapidly. With more than 500 franchises by 1986, the company went public on the NASDAQ, but has since gone private again after being purchased by Sterling Capital Partners.

The company operates a chain of tutoring and educational testing centers around the US. Entrepreneur Magazine has listed the company 25 times in their list of 500 Best Franchises.

Sylvan provides personalized learning programs with semi-private instructors. The company mainly provides tutoring services for primary and secondary education, but also provides testing and tutoring for college entrance and state exams.

Bite Squad was founded in 2012 by current CEO and owner Kian Salehi. Salehi and friend Arash Allaei, realized that there was a great need in the metropolitan Minneapolis area for a food delivery service. While the company began in Minneapolis, today it also serves St. Paul, Minnesota, Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado, and recently expanded to include Seattle, Washington, Orlando, Florida, Little Rock, Arkansas, Las Vegas, Nevada. and even Hawaii.

Using in-house developed technology, the company uses an algorithm which measures cooking time, the number of orders being placed, available drivers and even traffic flow to generate as precise an arrival time as possible. Customers, who place and track their order in real time online or through the Bite Squad app, get a text or call, including the driver’s picture, when they are nearby.

History

The company began with only 5 drivers and service to 17 restaurants. Today has 4,000 drivers, who are employees of the company, not “contracted drivers”. All drivers are in clearly marked cars, wear uniforms, and must use insulated boxes.

The company operates a restaurant food delivery service. Bite Squad claims to have thousands of restaurants and the company delivers within 7 miles of any given restaurant. Gift cards are available and pre-scheduled delivery is also available.

In 2017, the company acquired TakeOut Taxi, which opened up the Bethesda, Maryland, market to Bite Squad. And in January 2019, the company acquired delivery service LandShark.

Bite Squad was acquired by Waitr Holdings at the end of 2018 for $321 million.

Bite Squad was late introducing a mobile phone app, but did put one in the iTunes store in late 2015.

Due to the coronavirus in 2020, Bite Squad began hiring hundreds of drivers in a variety of cities, including Honolulu, Hawaii, Abilene, Texas, Wausau, Wisconsin, and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Company headquarters remain in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at this time. It is unknown if their acquisition by Waitr will change this.

Safelite was founded in 1947 by Bud Glassman and Art Lankin. They worked out of an auto junkyard in Witchita, Kansas.

The company operates a chain of automotive glass replacement stores. The company makes and installs automotive glass, such as front windshields, rear windshields, and side door glass, as well as exterior mirrors. Services are offered via mobile glass shops and company owned locations. There are currently 720 locations across the USA.

History

The company is best known for its mobile glass repair or replacement service. Customers can have their car serviced almost anywhere during business hours. Safelite also files insurance claims on customers behalf. The company was purchased by Belron US, Inc. and operates as a subsidiary.

Safelite Auto Glass operates in all 50 states and recently opened a 5th call center in New Mexico, in July of 2016, which added an additional 900 jobs to the economy.

In September 2021, Safelite acquired competitor Glass.net for an undisclosed amount.

It’s estimated that the demand for new auto glass will explode over the next 5 years.

Safelite maintains a corporate office in Columbus, Ohio.
