History

Today, Maui Jim is the third largest sunglass and prescription sunglass manufacturer in the world. The company offers more than 100 styles of glasses, with more being introduced every year, in 100 countries, with an average price of $240 a pair. All Maui Jim sunglasses block 99% of the sun’s glare and 100% of the harmful UV rays. Forbes Magazine listed Maui Jim sunglasses on their list of “100 Things Worth Every Single Penny.”

The company has its main headquarters in Peoria, Illinois, but maintains its “home base” in Hawaii. Sunglasses are manufactured in Illinois for shipment around the world. All repairs are done at the Illinois plant as well. Maui Jim glasses are marketed to those who want the best in life and care about their vision.

In August 2022, a federal grand jury indicted a former employee with mail and wire fraud involving the theft of sunglass parts.

Exede was launched in 2012 by ViaSat, Inc. The company operates a satellite based internet and telephone service. The company is powered by the Via-Sat 1 satellite, which has won the Guiness World Book of Records title for the satellite with the highest capacity for communication services.

As of 2015, the company has more than 687,000 customers in the US. The company provides services for those who live in remote areas who cannot use cable based telephone or internet service. The Via-Sat 1 has 63 beams and a 15 year lifespan. The company plans to launch Via-Sat 2 sometime in 2017 and is expected to double the Via-Sat capabilities.

Customers use a satellite dish, similar in size to other television satellites, as well as a wifi modem for service. The company also offers voice over IP for telephone service. Dish Network is the major reseller of Exede, although they market the internet service under their own name. The Via-Sat 1 satellite is the one used by American Airlines and others for broadband service while in-flight.

In addition to jeans, the company also offers sportswear, T-shirts, men’s shoes, active wear, and outerwear. The company launched a line of children’s clothing for infants and new borns on through age 10, in 2006. The company currently has more than 150 locations, an active eCommerce site, as well as offering their products in Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Dillards, to name a few.

Jeans make up 60% of the company’s sales. All jeans have two, 4 leaf clovers with the words “Lucky You”stitched on the outside fly. Some Lucky Jeans are still made in the USA, however, many are now made in China, Peru, Mexico, or Indonesia.

The company’s majority stockholder is the former owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, J. Wayne Weaver. Although the name says shoes, the company also offers handbags, wallets, socks, and shoe care items, such as leather cleaner.
