In 2016, the company acquired Life Storage for $1.3 billion. Following this acquisition, the company rebranded all units to the Life Storage name.

In February 2023, Public Storage announced that it would make a bid for Life Storage at $11 billion. Public Storage had tried earlier to acquire Life Storage but was unsuccessful.
As of 2023, Life Storage had more than 1,100 facilities in 37 states.
Life Storage maintains a corporate office in Buffalo, New York.
