Sodexo was founded in 1966 by Pierre Bellong in Marseille, France. Sodexo originally served company restaurants, schools, and hospitals under the name Société d’Exploitation Hotelière (English: Hotel Services Corporation). Today Sodexo is on the Fortune Global 500 list and is the second largest employer among all French multi-national corporations.

In 2010, the company entered into two partnerships; first with United Coffee, which will provide all coffee-related products and machines, and the second with Numi, which will provide organic teas.

After the death of Pierre Bellon in 2022, his daughter Sophie Bellon took over as CEO

By the end of 2022, Sodexo’s revenue was nearly back to the same pre-pandemic levels.

Sodexo also provides voucher services for large companies and government agencies. In April 2023, the company announced that it was going to spin off the voucher business into its own company.

Mr. Transmission

Mr. Transmission was founded in 1963 in Ontario, Canada, when transmission mechanics Jerry Etkin and Bruce Brillinger realized that there was a huge market for automotive transmission specialists.

The company began franchising in 1969. Today there are 65 locations in Canada and 12 in the southern US states of Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri.

Mr. Transmission was sold in 2013 to Responsive Brands, an investment firm.

History

In 2016, the company received an injunction against Mister Transmission for trademark infringement.

Mr. Transmission continues to expand, with new locations opening even during the pandemic, including the latest one in March 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Mr. Transmission/Milex Complete Auto Care is a co-branded operation under franchisor Moran Family of Brands. The two brands offer customers a comprehensive selection of automotive repair and maintenance services.

Mr. Transmission maintains a corporate office in the US in Midlothian, Illinois.

Smile Direct Club

Smiledirectclub was founded in 2014 by Jordan Katzman and Alex Fenkell. The company operates a teledentistry business whose main focus is 3D-printed invisible braces.

All communication with licensed orthodontic professionals and other SmileDirectClub staff takes place virtually. Impression kits are sent to customers, after which teeth molds are reviewed by dentists or orthodontists who oversee the treatment process.

The company reportedly works with 225 licensed professionals.

History

In 2018, the company went international by expanding into Canada. In 2019, the company again expanded by offering services in the UK and Australia.

In April 2019, SmileDirectClub announced it would place hundreds of locations inside CVS stores.

In September 2019, the company went public on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol SDC.

On December 5, 2022, the District of Columbia Attorney General Karl A. Racine filed suit against SmileDirectClub, alleging that the business violated DC law by requiring consumers to sign nondisclosure agreements to receive refunds that were promised. 

The matter is pending and a link to the lawsuit can be found at the Better Business Bureau.

Car-X was founded in 1971 by a group of muffler shop owners who wanted to do more with their businesses. No longer a muffler and exhaust repair location, Car-X does almost every type of auto repair you can think of- from head gasket replacement to brakes.

There are currently 160 franchised locations in 5 states.

In 2015, Monro Muffler purchased the Car-X trade name and franchise rights to 146 locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Texas.

Monro began expanding the Car-X name by adding additional locations.

In February 2023, Car-X was named in a lawsuit stating that the company harassed and discriminated against female employees.

Car-X has expanded its presence in Iowa by adding 8 new locations in the state in the past few years.

Taco Bueno was founded in 1967. The first location opened in Abilene, Texas.

Taco Management LLC, doing business as Taco Bueno, offers Tex-Mex-style fast food with 142 locations in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas.

The company has been bought and sold several times over the years, and for a short time ( 5 years) it was even owned by Carl’s Jr. However, in November 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy. It was then purchased by Sun Holdings, which also owns other franchises. An affiliate of Sun Holdings, Taco Supreme, assumed Taco Bueno’s outstanding debts and put $10 million into revitalizing the company.

In August 2022, Taco Bueno brought back a customer favorite, the Brisket Taco.

Also in August 2022, the company began expanding once more with new locations opening in Texas.
