Hot Chicken Takeover was founded in 2013 by Joe Deloss after a trip to a Nashville, Tennessee, hot chicken restaurant. Joe and his wife created their own recipe, which they taste-tested with passersby on the street! The pair bought a food truck until a crowd-funding effort allowed them to purchase a restaurant.

History

Today, the company has seven locations, with two being in the Columbus, Ohio, area, along with the food truck, and plans include opening more restaurants in the near future. Customers can purchase chicken by the piece or the entire bird, along with sides such as coleslaw and mac n cheese, as well as banana pudding and waffles.

The company is more famous for its mission statement than its food. Deloss believes in competitive wages and tips, a zero-interest cash advance service for employees, and hiring homeless or former prison inmates.

In November 2022, the Strongsville, Ohio, location abruptly closed with no explanation. However, that hasn’t stopped the company from opening new locations, including the Grandview, Ohio, area.

Boyds Philadelphia Corporate Office

Boyds Philadelphia was founded in 1938 by the Gushner brothers, whose father was a Russian immigrant whose corner business sold magazines, newspapers, and men’s dress shirts. His sons opened a small men’s wear store in Center City.

Today, Boyds no longer sells newspapers or cigars, but they do still offer men’s clothing. The company has expanded to include women’s clothing, hand tailored and customized clothing, as well as shoes and accessories, such as wallets, men’s and women’s fragrances, outerwear, and purses. In 2008, the company received the “Store of the Year” award from MR Magazine.

The company is still operated by the Gushner brothers, now the 4th generation to do so. The store and headquarters remain where they have been since 1990, on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The store is undergoing major remodeling and is a late comer to the world of eCommerce, where they opened their on line site in 2017.

Doyle Owens was selling insurance when a customer told him that Trailways was selling unclaimed baggage, site unseen. Doyle took $300 and bought every piece of luggage. Renting a house, Owens and his wife was shocked at the items they found in the bags and their value.

The Unclaimed Baggage Center is based on the same idea, only today the company has contracts with most of the airline companies. Bags are purchased at a flat rate. Employees of the company go through every item in every bag. Clothes are dry cleaned on site, other items are cleaned and appraisals are offered for more expensive items. The store has more than 40,000 square feet of space, but the company says it has no plans to sell items on line.

Unclaimed Baggage Center says it stocks at leas 7,000 new items every day. The company is still owned and operated by the Owens family with headquarters being located in Scottsboro, Alabama.

While the company was founded in unique items, today it is more focused on luxury brands. In October of 2017, one manager was fired after telling an African American employee that her box braids were not “Banana Republic Material”.

The company announced in September of 2017 that they would be closing stores that were under performing, while refusing to disclose which store locations would be affected.

In April 2021, Memphis native Prep Curry was hired by Banana Republic as its newest design partner.

Headquarters for Banana Republic are located in San Francisco, California.

Farm Fresh Supermarkets was founded in 1957 by David Furman. The name was chosen from entries that were submitted by local residents of Norfolk, Virginia. The company operates a chain of supermarkets, mainly in the state of Virginia.

The company currently has 42 locations which operate under the Farm Fresh name. Most of the company’s growth in the 1980’s-1990’s came from acquisitions, such as Giant Open Air Markets in 1986 and Lou Smith Markets in 1990. The company is best known for having one stop shopping, including in-store pharmacies, bakeries, and deli departments. The company also offers a beer, wine, and spirit loyalty card.

Farm Fresh Supermarkets operates as a subsidiary of SuperValu, who acquired the company in 1999. Headquarters are still located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
