Wakefield’s was founded in 1917 by James Wakefield. The company began by offering women’s clothing and accessories until James son, Martin, decided to expand the small store and add men’s and children’s shoes and clothing.

Today, the company has 10 locations in and around the greater Anniston, Alabama, area. The original Wakefield’s store remains and the remaining 9 locations are known as either Martin’s or Martin’s Family Clothing. Martin passed away in 2010.

Wakefield’s and Martin’s are still owned and operated by the Wakefield family, with the grandson of James, William, now acting as CEO. Company headquarters remain in Anniston, Alabama.

C-Town Supermarkets can trace their history back to 1920 when German immigrant Abraham Krasne opened his first supermarket named Krasdale’s Market. By 1975, the company decided to simply call themselves K-Town, only Kmart told them they would sue if they did. While trying to remove the letter K from a sign, the letter broke into what looked more like the letter C. The family thought it was fate, so C-Town became the name in 1975.

History

Today, C-Town has more than 200 locations in 5 states. In New York, it is the 5th largest supermarket in the metro New York area. The market tends to rely on small sections of town where larger stores have left the area. Most customers who frequent the stores have no cars, which explains why most C-Town markets have smaller than average parking lots.

A new C-Town location opened in Astoria, New York, in October 2020, increasing local traffic. Some speculate that this led to the death of a delivery person and residents are asking the city to invesitgate what can be done to make the area safer.

The company is well known for hiring local teenagers to work as cashiers and stockers. Company headquarters are located in Whiteplains, New York.

Smithfield’s Chicken N Bar-B-Q, opened in 1964 in Smithfield, North Carolina, under the name of Smithfield’s. As the company’s menu increased, the words chicken, and later, Bar-B-Q were added. The company operates a small chain of franchised restaurants in the state of North Carolina.

History

The company currently has 36 locations, most of them franchised. The company’s specialty is chicken, but also offers shrimp, sandwiches, stew, and hot dogs, along with banana pudding, pecan pie, coleslaw and hush puppies.

In 2007, CEO and owner Gregory Moore was sued for sexual harassment by a former employee. The court found Mr. Moore guilty and ordered him to pay $1.15 million. Two other former employees have since come forward stating that they were also fired when they rejected Mr. Moore’s advances.

The company was also recently in the spotlight when a video surfaced in April of 2017, showing the employees singing “F the Police” while the police were dining in the restaurant. This video was later removed and the Raleigh Police Chief stated that it the incidence was false.

Despite the coronavirus, the company is doing well, opening its 40th location in December 2020.

As of May 2023, the company continues to do well, opening new locations in North Carolina.

The Medicine Shoppe was founded in 1968 in St. Louis, Missouri, by pharmacist Michael Busch. The company operates a chain of franchised pharmacies in the US and globally. Busch sold his company to Cardinal Health for $360 million in 1995.

The company still operates as a subsidiary of Cardinal Health. The company offers health and wellness screening, medication therapy management, Medicare/Medicaid, home delivery of prescriptions and medical devices, and specialized care center services. In addition, the company provides franchise ownership opportunities to other entrepreneurial pharmacists and independent investors.

The Medicine Shoppe has approximately 1,000 franchises in the US and Canada, with more operating in other countries. Headquarters are still located in St.Louis, Missouri

The company operates a chain of limited assortment supermarkets, similar to Aldi’s, in 10 states. Currently, there are 64 locations that are still owned by Wakefern, with many of the new stores being located in New Jersey. In 2008, the company opened its first PriceRite Marketplace in Providence, Rhode Island. The 55,000 square foot store offers far more services than the regular PriceRite Supermarkets, including an organic line of produce, a fresh-roasted peanut stand, as well as a deli and seafood department.

In June 2020, the company donated $131,000 to food banks that are overwhelmed due to the coronavirus crisis.

PriceRite Supermarkets, along with PriceRite Marketplaces operate as subsidiary’s of Wakefern Food, with headquarters in Keasbey, New Jersey.
