Life Care Centers of America was founded in 1970 by Forest Preston, who remains the sole owner and CEO.

Life Care is the third largest privately held, long-term elder care company in the USA. Currently, there are 256 locations in 28 states.

In 2016 Life Care agreed to pay $145 Million to resolve allegations of over-billing the government for unnecessary or unreasonable rehabilitation services in violation of the False Claims Act.

History

Between January 2006 and February 2013, Life Care submitted fraudulent claims for rehabilitation therapy by engaging in a systematic effort to increase its Medicare and Tricare billings. This was the largest settlement by a skilled nursing facility in DOJ history.

A Life Care Center facility located in Kirkland, Washington, was the source of a major outbreak of the Covid-19 virus when first reported on February 19, 2020, which became the official first outbreak in a United States nursing home.

In May 2023, a jury found that Life Care Centers were not responsible for the deaths of two patients due to Covid.

In April 2023, Newsweek rated 16 Life Care Centers as Best Nursing Homes in the USA.

The Viceroy Hotel and Resort was founded in 1965 in Santa Monica, California. Starting off with a single hotel, the company now boasts 6 locations in the United States, 3 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 2 in Europe and Asia.

Current CEO Bill Walshe says that despite the pandemic of 2020/2022, the company has continued to grow by focusing on what they can do, rather than what they cannot do.

In January 2023, Viceroy Hotels was acquired by Highgate, a hospitality company, for an undisclosed amount. The merger should be completed by the end of the year.

In November 2020, Viceroy Hotels opened a woman-centric hotel in Washington, D.C., called Hotel Zena.

Fitworks was founded in 1996 by Linda Ortiz. The company operates a chain of franchised gyms and workout locations.

Fitworks currently has 6 locations in Ohio, down from a high of 15 locations. Many of the gyms were forced to close due to the Covid pandemic of 2020/2022.

Fitworks offers low-priced gym memberships, often for as little as $10 a month. Since the company is a franchise, many gym owners feel that they have more freedom to offer other services that local clients will love.

History

Some locations offer personal trainers while others don’t so check before you sign up for a yearly contract.

The company does not offer swimming pools but many locations have saunas or infrared saunas.

Encompass Health was founded in 1998 in Agusta, Georgia. The company is one of the largest providers of post-acute health care services, offering both facility-based and home-based operations.

Currently, Encompass Health offers three divisions of healthcare: inpatient rehabilitation, home health, and hospice.

Encompass is developing private rehabilitation rooms in hospitals, as well as semi-private rooms.

In March 2023, Encompass Health opened a 36-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

In May 2023, the company announced that it was building a 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Concordville, Pennsylvania.

Also in May 2023, financial experts stated that Encompass stock is a definite hold for the foreseeable future.

In late May 2023, Encompass Health hosted a job fair for the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Similar job fairs are expected in other states during the summer of 2023.

Arlo Hotels opened its first two hotels in 2016 in New York City. The company continues to open new locations, often by remodeling abandoned buildings or those in bankruptcy proceedings.

Currently, Arlo has 6 hotels and plans to open several more over the next 5 years.

Arlo Hotels has focused more on luxury than size but that will change with the opening of the former Williamsburg Hotel in Brooklyn.

In February 2023, Arlo Hotels partnered with ArtRepublic to launch immersive art programs.

In April 2023, Arlo opened a new hotel in Chicago, Illinois. This 218-room hotel is close to Millenium Park. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the violence in Chicago to affect the Arlo.
