Fundrise was founded by two brothers, Dan and Ben Miller, in 2010. The company operates a finance start-up that provides an online platform for real estate investment. The brothers founded the company with the idea to allow residents in the D.C. area to invest in real estate development projects they were building.

After the initial project, Fundrise was contacted by real estate companies looking to use the Fundrise platform to raise capital. Soon thereafter, the company expanded its platform to allow conventional real estate investments from commercial developers across the United States. By the end of May 2014, the company reported having facilitated $15 million in investments involving more than 1,000 investors.

History

In 2018, Fundrise placed position 35 overall and the number 1 position in the financial services industry on the Inc. 5000 list.

Fundrise received a mainly positive review from Motley Fool, who gave the company 3.8 out of a possible 5-star rating.

Real Estate crowdfunding is estimated to grow significantly through 2026.

Pearl Brewery goes all the way back to 1883 in San Antonio, Texas. Originally called J. B. Behloradsky Brewery and The City Brewery, a group of local businessmen purchased the brewery, along with Lone Star Brewing Company, to form the San Antonio Brewing Company.

Pearl beer was originally formulated and produced in Germany. In 1886, Pearl Beer, delivered in barrels, began to flow from the taps, until Prohibition was enacted in 1919. Emily Koehler, the owner at the time, vowed to not let Prohibition close the brewery. She changed the name, again, to Alamo Industries, and began to make a “near beer” that would follow Prohibition laws. The near-beer, called La Perla (the pearl in Spanish), helped retain some customers, but to help the bottom line, the company also ran a small automotive repair shop, ice cream, ice, and others. Combined, these helped to keep the company afloat until the end of Prohibition in 1933.

History

Pabst Brewing Company took over Pearl until hard times forced the company to close all of their breweries, including Pearl, in 2001. In 2002, Silver Ventures purchased the brewery and the 23 acres it sits on. With it’s proximity to the River Walk, the Pearl Brewery now boasts an indoor Farmer’s Market, shopping, restaurants, a hotel, a water park, and much more.

Headquarters for Pearl Brewing Company are still located in San Antonio, Texas.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seed

Jere Gettle was always interested in gardening. He planted his first seeds when he was only 3. In 1998, Gettle printed his first Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog.

The company carries one of the largest selection of non-GMO seeds from the 19th century, including Asian and European varieties. More than 2,000 varieties of vegetables, flowers, and herbs are offered via a mail-order catalog. The catalog is free and currently has a subscription list of more than 700,000 gardeners from around the world.

History

Starting in 2000, the company began hosting festivals and attending local events to bring together gardeners, homesteaders, and natural food lovers to share ideas and enjoy themselves. The company’s annual spring festival brings at least 10,000 persons to their farm.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has two locations; one in Petaluma, California, and Mansfield, Missouri. Organic and heirloom seeds are expected to increase in sales and popularity over the next decade.

In April 2019, the company had plans to invite Clive Bundy to their annual spring festival to discuss dry farming methods, but his participation was canceled due to protests.

Belle Tire

Belle Tire was founded in 1921 by Sam Waze. He named the tire shop after his wife, Belle. The first location was in Detroit, Michigan. Originally selling tire inner tubes and tires, the company now also performs oil changes, brake repair, battery service, and glass replacement.

The company grows mainly through acquisition, including TireMan, and Sears, The company operates 133 locations in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.

History

The company settled a racial discrimination lawsuit for $55,000 in September 2019 after a former employee was fired 48 hours after reporting the manager of a Port Huron location.

The company ran into trouble with county zoning laws when they erected a 60-foot tall flagpole in front of one of their newest locations. Belle Tire executives are negotiating with county officials.

In September 2020, Home Depot and Belle Tire in the state of Michigan were fined for not following proper COVID prevention measures, such as face masks.

In March 2023, Belle Tire acquired 18 Tireman Auto Service Centers.

James Thornton Prince was a well-known man in Nashville, Tennessee, in the early 1940s. He loved fried chicken and was quite the ladies man. The story of how Prince’s Hot Chicken got its beginnings might be anecdotal, but one of Prince’s steady girlfriends was angry that he had taken another girl out on the town. Rather than being angry, she decided to get even and made a big pan of fried chicken, overloaded with red chili powder. Prince was not upset or angry, in fact, he asked for more and asked about her recipe.

The first Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack was called the Bar=B-Que Chicken Shack. It moved several times until it ended up near the Grand Ol’ Opry. Customers would come to the chicken shack after each performance. The company is now owned and operated by Thornton Prince’s great-nephew, Andre Prince Jeffries.

History

The company has two locations in Nashville and in October of 2019, it opened a new location in the Nashville airport. The Travel Channel listed the restaurant chain as the Best Place to Get Hot Chicken in 2013.

Gourmet Magazine listed Prince’s Hot Chicken as one of the four don’t miss dining experiences.

Headquarters are still located in Nashville, Tennessee.
