Jere Gettle was always interested in gardening. He planted his first seeds when he was only 3. In 1998, Gettle printed his first Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog.

 The company carries one of the largest selection of non-GMO seeds from the 19th century, including Asian and European varieties. More than 2,000 varieties of vegetables, flowers, and herbs are offered via a mail-order catalog.  The catalog is free and currently has a subscription list of more than 700,000 gardeners from around the world.

 Starting in 2000, the company began hosting festivals and attending local events to bring together gardeners, homesteaders, and natural food lovers to share ideas and enjoy themselves. The company’s annual spring festival brings at least 10,000 persons to their farm.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has two locations; one in Petaluma, California, and Mansfield, Missouri. Organic and heirloom seeds are expected to increase in sales and popularity over the next decade. 

In April 2019, the company had plans to invite Clive Bundy to their annual spring festival to discuss dry farming methods, but his participation was canceled due to protests.
