uShip

uShip was founded in 2003 by Matt Chasen, Jay Manickam, and Mickey Millsap. This trio developed the business plan while still attending college at the University of Texas School of Business.

From 2012 through 2015, uShip was part of a reality show called Shipping Wars, which followed a group of independent shippers that would bid for jobs posted on uShip.

The company has developed a Shipping Price Estimator which provides estimates for transport services based on a weighted average of similar goods transported over similar distances on the uShip marketplace.

History

In 2011, eBay began using uShip’s price estimator for large items such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, golf carts, and engines.

In July 2016, uShip partnered with trucking giant DB Schenker to power an online trucking platform.

Due to the coronavirus, uShip was forced to lay off 65 employees in April 2020.

uShip maintains a corporate office in Austin, Texas.

Sonesta International Hotels got its start when real estate mogul A.M. “Sonny” Sonnabend convinced 6 other investors to purchase the Preston Beach Hotel in Massachusetts. By 1944, the company owned 5 hotels, including the Biltmore and the Palm Beach Country Club in Florida.

Today, this international hotel chain has 200 locations in 8 countries, with the company adding 81 extended-stay hotels and 22 full-service hotels and resorts in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico in August 2020.

Also in August 2020, the former Trump Hotel in Vancouver, Canada, now bankrupt, is expected to be rebranded as a Sonesta International property.

History

The company opened 65 new hotels and resorts in 2019 alone.

In July 2022, Equinox Hospitality acquired four properties in Texas from Sonesta International Hotels. Equinox Hotel Management, a subsidiary of Equinox Hospitality, will operate the properties.

Sean Spector and Jung Suh partnered with founding CEO Toby Lenk to start GameFly in 2002. The company operates an American online video game rental subscription service.

The company offers games for nearly all types of handheld and console game platforms, including Xbox 1, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Gameboy Advance, and Nintendo Switch.

In 2009 GameFly sued the U.S. Postal Service alleging the favoring of Netflix and Blockbuster by sorting their DVDs at no charge. A judge ruled in 2013 that the postal service must stop showing preference to other companies. The company sends games to subscribers for a monthly fee. Over 8,000 titles are currently available.

In August 2020, GameFly updated their subscription prices and added a new one-time flat fee option.

Schoolteacher Ken Selby opened Mazzio’s in 1961 and frequently operated the restaurant by himself after work and on weekends. In 1965, Selby didn’t have time for both jobs, so he stopped teaching and operated the restaurant full-time.

By 1975, Selby had two restaurant locations and he began franchising the following year. Selby conceived a new business approach in the late 1970s. His idea called for more square footage of casual dining space, an expanded menu, thicker pizza served with much more meats and cheeses, sub sandwiches along with a salad bar.

That concept has proven to be highly successful. The company now has 165 locations in 10 states.

During the coronavirus crisis of 2020, many Mazzio’s were forced to close and conduct only delivery service or take out orders but many locations are now looking forward to reopening.

Hattie B’s was founded in 2012 by Nick Bishop Sr. and Nick Bishop Jr. The company is named after three family members who were all named Hattie.

The company sells spicy fried chicken with different levels of spiciness being offered, along with side dishes such as coleslaw, French fries, baked beans, and Southern green beans. Desserts include banana pudding, hot chocolate chip cookies, and fruit cobbler.

Hattie B’s Hot Chicken now has 8 locations, with the most recent being opened inside the Cosmopolitan Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2018. and in downtown Chicago in late 2019.

History

The company is planning on opening a location somewhere in Texas in late 2020 but the actual city has yet to be announced.

During the coronavirus crisis in the early part of 2020, many restaurants had difficulties but Hattie B’s simply changed their business plan and offered free delivery service, which appears to be keeping the company afloat.
