Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs was founded in1916 when Nathan Handwerker opened up a 5 cent hot dog stand on Coney Island. Handwerker and his wife used their life savings of $300 to open the stand. The hot dog recipe, which is still used today, came from his wife’s grandmother. The original hot dog stand is still in operation.
The company operates a chain of restaurants whose main selling item are hot dogs. The company went public on the NASDAQ in 1968 and can be found under the ticker symbol: NATH. All locations were sold to a private investor in 1987. Franchising took on a greater role in the company after this acquisition.
Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs features a hot dog eating contest at the original site every summer. Joey Chestnut was the winner in 2016, consuming 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
