Universal Forest Products was incorporated in 1955 as The Universal Products as a lumber distributor to the manufacturing housing market by William F. Grant. Grant was the sole owner/operator and salesman until 1962 when he hired Peter F. Secchia.

By 1971, the company had annual sales of more than $12 million.

In 1978 the company entered the treated lumber sector when it began producing pressure-treated wood at a plant in Florida. The following year, the company makes its first shipment of treated lumber to Home Depot.

In the 1980’s Universal Forest Products began to market to the DIY market. By 1983, the company is so large that it divides itself into five geographic divisions: Northeast, Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, and Southwest.

In 2005, CEO Matt Missad is named to Fortune’s “Businessperson of the Year” list, an annual ranking of the top 50 corporate leaders in the world.

Today the company is a manufacturer of engineered wood and construction materials. Clients include do-it-yourself stores, industrial customers, and residential and mobile home builders. The company operates 80 facilities throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The new company was made up of three main divisions: Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division produced airframes, Wright Aeronautical Corporation manufactured aircraft engines, and Curtiss-Wright Propeller produced propellers.
