Ice Cream

Steve’s Ice Cream Corporate Office

Steve’s Ice Cream was founded in 1973 in Somerville, Massachusetts. Steve Herrell first altered a small batch, commercial ice cream freezer and created a creamy, low air ice cream that was unique for its time. Later, he added things such as M&M’s, fruit, or broken up Heath candy bars, another unique concept in its day. Herrell sold the business in 1977 for $80,000. While the company did franchising for a short time, problems arose when the company began selling prepacked ice cream in stores. Many franchisers either lost their business or sold it.

The company was purchased in 2009 by an original Steve’s Ice Cream employee, David Stein. Steve’s Ice Cream now has 3 locations in New York, as well as selling prepackaged ice cream at local stores.

Amy’s Ice Creams Corporate Office

Amy’s Ice Creams was founded by former Steve’s Ice Cream employee, Amy Simmons in 1984. While a student at Tufts University, Simmons and her business partner Scott Shaw, decided to open their own ice cream shop in Austin, Texas. Simmons did not have enough cash for her first store lease, but wrote a hot check, hoping to make enough money to cover it by the second deposit.

Today, the company has 13 locations, mostly in Texas. Simmons has said that she did not want to lose control of her business, so she plans to expand it slowly. While Amy’s Ice Creams has more than 300 flavors of ice cream and fruit ices, each store has a limited number of flavors and rotates them each month.

Amy’s Ice Creams is known for allowing, and even encouraging, employees to be a bit outlandish in their dress and serving style. Purple hair, multiple piercings, and made up songs are an every day occurrence at many locations.

Dippin’ Dots Corporate Office

Dippin´Dots was founded in 1987 by Curt Jones, a graduate student from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jones discovered that if he mixed ice cream with liquid nitrogen and flash froze it, the ice cream took on a different flavor, as well as shape. Jones´first operation was located in his parent´s garage.

Since the product must be kept frozen at extremely cold temperatures (typically -40F) it cannot be sold outside of store locations. Dippin´Dots acquired a patent for its unique ice cream in 1992, essentially freezing out the competition.

The company filed for bankruptcy in late 2011. It was purchased by Scott and Mark Fischer, co-founders of Chaparrel Energy, in 2012. The Fischers have stated that they hope to increase the number of store locations from 1,600 to 2,000 within 5 years.
