Marriott International Corporate Office

Marriott International was founded by John Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice Sheets Marriott, when they opened their first hotel, the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

The founder’s son, J.W. Marriott, brought the company to huge worldwide growth during his 50+ year career.

Marriott International was formed in 1993 when Marriott Corporation was split into two companies, Marriott International and Host Marriott Corporation.

In 1995 Marriott International acquired 49% interest in Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, a then-struggling company. Marriott later acquired Ritz-Carlton. Between the years 2002 and 2003 Marriott International spun off some of its divisions to focus more on hotel management and ownership

Today Marriott International is one of the world’s leading hoteliers with 3,700 operated or franchised properties globally.

In late 2017, the company stated that it intended to open 40 luxury hotels in 2018.

The company owns Fairfield Inn, Courtyard, Marriott Hotels and Resorts, and the Ritz-Carlton luxury chain. It also manages about 45 golf courses.

In February 2023, Marriott topped expected 4th quarter earnings.

Also in February 2023, Michael Irvin sued Marriott and a hotel employee for an incident after the Superbowl game.

Marriott International publicly trades on the NASDAQ, is a member of the S&P 500, and is #230 in the Fortune 500. The company has 120,000 employees and had $13.86 billion in revenue in 2021.

Marriott maintains a corporate office in Bethesda, Maryland.

Motel 6 Corporate Office

Motel 6 was founded by William Becker and Paul Greene in Santa Barbara, California in 1962.

The partners wanted to build motels with bargain rates and decided on the rate of $6 per night; a rate which would cover building costs, land leases, and janitorial supplies. This $6 rate is the reason for the name “Motel 6.”

To cut costs the brand offered coin-operated black and white television sets instead of the free color televisions offered at more upscale hotels. Motel 6 also had no on-site dining, a model that continues today.

Throughout the 1960’s the Motel 6 model became more popular and the company began to take a small market share away from bigger chains.

By 1980 Motel 6 had 300 locations.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts bought Motel 6 in 1985 and began to move it away from the no-frills approach.

French-based Accor bought the company in 1990 and began franchising in 1994 in order to expand more quickly

In 2000, Motel 6 expanded internationally for the first time with a location in Ontario, Canada.

In 2008, the company began a nationwide overhaul and remodeling of all locations. The newly designed rooms won the Travel and Leisure Design Award in 2010.

The Blackstone Group bought the motel chain in 2012 for $1.9 billion.

In September 2017, immigration attorneys accused Motel 6 desk clerks at two locations in Phoenix, Arizona, of notifying US Immigration when guests checked in only with identification from Mexico. The attorneys said that court records showed that federal immigration agents arrested at least 20 people the Phoenix Motel 6 locations over the course of seven months in 2017. Motel 6 stated that this was an isolated incident at the Phoenix locations and that they did not endorse this practice.

In June 2019 the company settled a class action lawsuit over this practice. Settlement terms included a 3-year agreement to not violate customer privacy and pay $12 million.

Today Motel 6 has more than 1,100 locations in the United States and Canada. Motel 6 also operates extended-stay hotel chain Studio 6, which has about 60 locations. Company headquarters are located in Carrollton, Texas.

Hyatt Corporate Office

Hyatt was founded in 1957 when Jay Pritzker purchased the Hyatt House motel, located just minutes from the Los Angeles airport, from Hyatt Robert von Dehn & Jack D. Crouch for $2.2 million.

Realizing that quality hotels near airports would be a lucrative business, the Pritzker’s opened a second Hyatt in 1960 at the San Francisco airport, and the following year, at the Seattle/Tacoma airport in Washington.

In 1962, the company went public on the NYSE under the easy to remember ticker symbol of: H.

In 1968, Hyatt International was formed and hotels were opened in Hong Kong.

In 1979, the Pritzker family took Hyatt private.

In 2004, the company acquired AmeriSuites. Summerfield Suites was acquired the following year.

In 2009, the company went public again as the result of lawsuits within the Pritzker family.

In 2011, the company acquired the Hotel Sierra chain.

Today, the Hyatt Hotels Corporation owns over 500 properties worldwide. These properties operate under several names, including Park Hyatt, Andaz, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Hyatt Resorts and Hyatt Residence Club.

Headquarters for the company remain in Chicago, Illinois.

Best Western Corporate Office

Best Western was founded in 1946 by hotelier M.K. Guertin as an informal referral system for member hotels. During those years, hotels in California and other western states were generally family owned, roadside motels or larger urban hotels. This service, which was literally nothing more than a phone referral service where one desk operator talked to another about recommended hotels and motels, would eventually grow into the Best Western hotels we know today.

By 1962, the company had the only hospitality reservation system in the US which covered the entire nation.

By 1963, there were 700 member hotels, making them the largest chain in the industry.

In 1964, Canadian hotels were admitted into the association.

In 1977 the company began using the phrase, “world’s largest lodging chain”.

The chain began franchising in the UK in 1978.

In 1980, Denmark, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland joined the association.

In 1995, the company launches BestWestern.com website. By 2005, there are booking $1 million in reservations per day online.

Best Western then expanded to Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand in 1976.

In 2002, Best Western International launched Best Western Premier in Europe and Asia. In 2011, the company began to list their hotels under three different tiers; Best Western, Best Western Plus, and Best Western Premier.

In 2004, Best Western became the official hotel of Nascar.

In May of 2013, Best Western announced that it will take over management of the Green Hill Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar. This acquisition will give the hotel Best Western’s brand name, as well as establishing Best Western as their first hotel establishment in the country.

The company began using IBM’s Watson AI to personalize and target their marketing ads by asking potential clients about travel plans on search engines in 2019.

In August 2019, Best Western Rewards Program was named as one of the Top Loyalty Programs in the US for the 7th consecutive year by US News & World Report.

Today, Best Western is made up of over 4200 hotels worldwide with nearly half of those in North America. Estimated annual revenue worldwide in 2012 was $6 billion. Headquarters for the company are located in Phoenix, Arizona.
