The Raytheon Company was founded in 1922 by engineers Laurence K. Marshall and Vannevar Bush, and the scientist Charles G. Smith as the American Appliance Company in Massachusetts. The company originally focused on refrigeration technology but soon changed to electronics.

The company’s first product was a radio-receiver power supply that made it possible to convert household alternating current to direct current and thus eliminate the need for batteries. This invention was called Raytheon, meaning light of/from the gods.

In 1925 the company changed its name to Raytheon and marketed the product with the same name, to great commercial success.

During World War II Raytheon received a contract from the U.S. Government to manufacture a device that improved the capability of radar to detect enemy aircraft.

In the research for this device, the potential of microwaves to cook food was discovered and the company manufactured the first microwave oven in 1947.

In 1961 Raytheon merged with A.C. Cosser, a British electronics company.

In 1980 the company acquired Beech Aircraft Corporation, a leading manufacturer of general aviation aircraft.

In the 1990’s Raytheon expanded further in the defense electronics field through numerous acquisitions.

Deere & Company Corporate Office

Deere & Company began when John Deere, a blacksmith, opened a 1,378 square feet shop in Grand Detour, Illinois in 1837 which allowed him to be the general repairman for the village. He also manufactured small tools, such as shovels and pitchforks.

Deere pioneered the steel plow in 1837. This plow was revolutionary to farmers as the rich mid western soil stuck to the wooden plows used previously, while it did not stick to the smooth steel. At first, Deere manufactured each plow as it was ordered. Later on he changed to making stock so that customers could see what they were buying beforehand.

The company expanded, and in 1857 they were selling more than 1,000 implements per month.

By the time of Deere’s death in 1886, the company was manufacturing a variety of farm equipment products.

In the 1900s Deere began to manufacture gasoline-powered tractors. Deere expands this line and in 1963 was world’s largest producer and seller of farm and industrial tractors and equipment. Total sales reached $1 billion for the first time in 1966.

Deere then expanded globally, and had $3 billion in overseas sales in 1997.

Today Deere & Company, known as John Deere, is one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery in the world. It is part of the S&P 500 and was 97 on the Fortune 500 list in 2012. It produces tractors, combine harvesters, cotton harvesters, balers, planters/seeders, sprayers, UTVs, construction equipment, forestry equipment, as well as parts used in diesel engines, lawn mowers, snowthrowers, and lawn tractors. Deere also offers financial services to support the core businesses. Their revenue for 2010 was $26 billion.

In 1971, the company acquires a 34% stake in Isuzu Motors.

In 1984, the company acquires Electronic Data Systems.  That company is spun off in 1996.

In 1986, the company acquires Hughes Aircraft.

In 1990, the company acquires 50% of Saab and launches the Saturn brand.

In 1999, the company acquires a 20% interest in Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru.

In 2000, the company takes full control of Saab and acquires 20% of Fiat.

In 2009, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  This resulted in a government bailout and the closing of the Pontiac, Saab, Hummer, and Saturn brands.

In 2010, the company filed an IPO and returned to profitability.

Today, General Motors is one of the largest automakers in the world.  The company produces vehicles in 37 countries under 11 brands.

In May 2023, GM recalled nearly 1 million vehicles for defective airbags. 

Also in May 2023, GM hired an ex-Apple executive to head the new software unit.
