Nokia Corporate Office

Nokia can trace its history back to 1865 when engineer Fredrik Idestam built a pulp mill in Finland.  In 1868, he built a second mill near the town of Nokia.

In 1902, the company began to generate electricity as part of its business model.

The company produced its first electronic device, a pulse analyzer, in 1962.

Nokia became involved in the telecom industry in the 1970s with the release of the Nokia DX 200, a digital switch for telephone exchanges.

In 1984, the company released the Mobira Talkman, one of the world’s first mobile phones.  Nokia was one of the key partners in developing GSM cell phone technology.

Nokia was the world’s largest vendor of mobile phones from 1998 to 2012.  The company has lost market share in recent years due to iPhone and Android devices but has seen a resurgence with their Lumia lineup.

In 1985, the Turbo PC was launched.

In 1988, the company changed its name to Dell Computer Corporation and went public with an IPO.

Dell went private in 2013 but stated the company would go public again in 2016. After acquiring the EMC Corporation for $60 billion, the company made Dell and EMC divisions of Dell Technologies, Inc. 

In its first report after going public, the company beat anticipated revenue estimates in March 2019.

In February 2021, Dell crushed Wall Street expectations by posting much stronger than anticipated sales numbers. 

Dell is currently the third-largest PC vendor in the world, behind HP and Lenovo, with revenue in 2018 listed as $78.7 billion.

Headquarters for Dell remains in Round Rock, Texas.

The Sports Authority opened its first store in 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  In 1990, the company was acquired by Kmart.

By 1995, there were 136 stores in 26 states.

In 2003, Sports Authority merged with Gart Sports.  Gart Sports was founded in 1928 and had nearly 200 locations at the time of the merger.  All Gart Sports locations were renamed to Sports Authority.

In 2006, the company was purchased by Leonard Green & Partners in a leveraged buyout.

Today, the company operates over 450 stores in the United States.  The company websites is operated by GSI Commerce.

Delta Airlines began in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters.  The company began with a single crop duster that began carrying single passengers from one Southeastern state to another in 1929.

In 1928, Collett Woolman purchased the company and renamed it to Delta.

Today’s Delta is the result of numerous acquisitions of smaller airlines.  Some of these include Pan American in 1991, Chicago and Southern in 1953, Northeast in 1972, Northwest in 2010 and many more.

The company received criticism after a flight attendant forbid a passenger from singing the national anthem when a fallen soldier’s body was loaded on the plane. Delta later apologized to the passenger stating that this was not corporate policy but a misguided employee’s mistake.
