Gap Corporate Office

The Gap was founded in 1969 by Donald and Doris Fisher.  The first store was located on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco.

In 1970, a second location was opened in San Jose.

By 1973, there were 25 locations and had expanded to the east coast.

In 1974, the company began selling private label merchandise.

During the 1990s, the company rebranded as an upscale clothier under CEO Millard Drexler.  Drexler was fired in 2002 for overexpanding the company and also for clashing with the Fisher family.

Today, the company operates over 3000 stores (over 2500 of which are in the US) worldwide under three brands: Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy.

Urban Outfitters Corporate Office

Urban Outfitters began in 1972 as the Free People Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The company was founded by current CEO Richard Hayne and Scott Belair.  The two were roommates at Lehigh University.

In 1976, the store was moved to a larger building and renamed to Urban Outfitters.

In 1980, a second store was opened in Cambridge, MA.

In 1987, Kenneth Cleeland was hired as CFO.  Cleeland cleaned up the books and helped Hayne open 6 more stores in the following 3 years.

In 1992, the first Anthropologie store was opened in Wayne, PA.

Despite the coronavirus, Urban Outfitters was expected to have a banner year in 2022. 

In February 2022, the company announced that it would also sell Chlorophyll Water at select locations. 

Today, Urban Outfitters operates over 400 retail locations under five brands: Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain and BHLDN.

Chesapeake Energy was founded in 1989 by Aubrey K. McClendon and Tom L. Ward.  The company initially focused on drilling horizontal natural gas wells.

In 1993, the company went public.  In 1995, the moved from the NASDAQ to the NYSE.

The company grew rapidly from 2003 to 2007 due to rising natural gas prices.

In 2006, the company was added to the S&P 500.

In 2008, the company discovered the Haynesville Shale in East Texas.

In 2011, the company purchased naming rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder arena, now called Chesapeake Energy arena.

In 2012, Archie Dunham replaced Aubrey McClendon as Chairman.

In 2013, McClendon retired from the company after his borrowing practices were called under question.

Today, Chesapeake is the second largest natural gas producer in the United States.

Hyatt was founded in 1957 when Jay Pritzker purchased the Hyatt House motel, located just minutes from the Los Angeles airport, from Hyatt Robert von Dehn & Jack D. Crouch for $2.2 million.

Realizing that quality hotels near airports would be a lucrative business, the Pritzker’s opened a second Hyatt in 1960 at the San Francisco airport, and the following year, at the Seattle/Tacoma airport in Washington.

iRobot was founded in 1990 by MIT Artificial Lab group members Rodney Brooks, current CEO Colin Angle, and Helen Greiner.

In 1998, the company received a research grant from DARPA which led to the creation of the PackBot.

In 2002, the company released their most popular home robot, the Roomba.roomba

In 2012, the company acquired Evolution Robotics, maker of the Mint floor mop robot.

In October 2018, stock for the company fell 11.2% after the company announced that President Trump’s tariffs would hurt the company and cause them to increase prices.

Today, iRobot has sold over 8 million home robots.  They have also deployed over 5,000 defense and security robots for military use.

In January 2020, the company announced that it was working on a Roomba version that had arms and how this could be used for consumer and commercial needs.

Also in January 2020, iRobot announced that it was taking its WiFi enabled Roomba’s to the next level by allowing them to interact with other smart-enabled home applicances and devices. 

Company headquarters are located in Bedford, Massachusetts.
