Shopify was founded in 2006 when founders Tobias Lutke and Scott Lake tried to open a snowboarding company to sell products online.

Unhappy with the eCommerce platforms available at the time, Lutke, a computer programmer, decided to make his own. Shopify uses a proprietary eCommerce platform for online stores and retail point of sale systems. The Shopify platform offers online retailers a suite of services including payments, marketing, shipping, and customer engagement tools.

The company stated in May of 2021 that it had more than 1,700,000 businesses in approximately 175 countries using its platform.

In April 2010, the company launched its own app, allowing Shopify store owners to view and manage their stores from mobile devices.

In August 2019, Shopify launched Shopify Chat, a new native chat function that allows merchants to have real-time conversations with customers visiting Shopify stores online.

In December 2021, a group of publishers including Pearson Education, Inc., Macmillan Learning, Cengage Learning, Inc., Elsevier Inc., and McGraw Hill sued Shopify claiming that it had failed to remove listings and stores selling pirated copies of their books and learning materials.

While Shopify is based in Canada, there is also an American corporate office located in San Francisco, California.

In January 2022, the competition to woo store owners really heated up between Shopify and Amazon.

Carhartt was founded back in 1889 when Hamilton Carhartt began making sturdy work clothes for those in manual labor jobs. The company began with 5 employees and two sewing machines.

Carhartt was soon making bib overalls for railroad workers. He would visit them on the job site to ensure that the clothing he made was suitable for the job.

Today, Carhartt is best known for its full-cut, wind-resistant, snag-proof, heavy-duty work jackets, which are popular with construction workers, miners, farmers, hunters, and outdoors people.

Carhartt has also successfully expanded its appeal to general streetwear. Most jacket designs are plain and manufactured in muted colors such as mustard, khaki, and navy blue. They are usually waist-length or three-quarter length. Most are made from relatively stiff 12-ounce cotton canvas with triple-stitched seams.

Carhartt is still a privately held, family-owned company, owned by the descendants of founder Hamilton Carhartt.

Carhartt products are sold by a variety of retailers, but the company refuses to have their items sold in discount stores such as Walmart.

The company has a flagship store located in Detroit, Michigan.

Carhartt clothing is also popular with politicians trying to connect with blue-collar voters. Sarah Palin, Rick Perry, and Barack Obama have all been seen prominently wearing Carhartt clothing or jackets.

In January 2022, the company was criticized by conservative news media for its COVID-19 mandate for employees.

The company defended its stance and faces a possible boycott.

In 1994, with the help of Fox Network co-founder Kevin Wendle and former Disney creative associate Dan Baker, CNET produced four pilot television programs about computers, technology, and the Internet. 

CNet, which is short for Computer Network, publishes reviews regarding computers, cell phones, and other types of technology equipment, in addition to news, blogs, and podcasts.

The company originally produced content for radio and television in addition to its website and now uses new media distribution methods through its internet television network, CNet Video, and its podcast and blog networks.

CNet also publishes region-specific and language-specific additions, including Chinese, Spanish, Korean, French, and German.

In September 2020, Red Ventures acquired CNet for $500 million.

The website has thousands of programs or apps that can be downloaded for free. While CNet claims that all programs are free from viruses or malware, this isn’t always true.

In 1996, Churchill Downs took their betting site online, calling it TwinSpires.

Twinspires’ cell phone app not only allows players to bet on horseraces but also on other sporting events in 7 states, such as football and basketball.

The parent company of TwinSpires also owns several casinos, including the Lady Luck Nemacolin in Pennsylvania, and the Presque Isle Downs. Casino-type games can also be played on the apps or online via the website.
