Carpenter Technology was founded by James H. Carpenter with a group of investors in 1889 as Carpenter Steel Company. Carpenter had the goal to improve how steel was manufactured, and in 1896 he received the company’s first patent for an improvement in air-hardened steel.

In the early years of the company, Carpenter steel was used to produce automobiles, Wright Brothers aeroplanes, and landing gear on aircraft-carrier-based jet fighters.

Today the company is known as a pioneer in stainless steel and produces corrosion-resistant materials from cobalt,nickel, manganese, and titanium for clients in the aerospace, automotive, industrial, and medical industries.
