In 2011, Lone Star Funds put together a supermarket portfolio, which included Bi-Lo Markets, Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Mas, and Harvey’s Supermarkets. The company is now the fifth-largest conventional supermarket chain in the U.S. and the second-largest conventional supermarket in the southeast based on store count.

Currently, the company operates in 7 states and has 704 locations under the Bi-Lo, Winn-Dixie, Harvey’s and Fresco Y Mas names. The company continues to grow, mainly through acquisitions. In 2013, Southeastern Grocers acquired 22 Piggly Wiggly’s in South Carolina for $35 million and in the same year, Bi-Lo acquired Harvey’s, Sweetbay and Reid’s banners for $265 million.

The Fresco Y Mas name was unveiled in 2016. This part of the Southeastern Grocers group is designed to appeal to the Hispanic market, with the name meaning “Fresh and More” in English.

Grocery Outlet Corporate Office

Grocery Outlet was founded in 1946 in San Francisco, California, by James Read, who purchased surplus government food and resold the items in rented vacant stores in and around the greater San Francisco area. Originally called Cannery Sales, the company changed its name in 1970 to Canned Foods, which was changed again in 1987 to Grocery Outlet, when James sons, Steven and Peter, took over the company.

Today, Grocery Outlet has approximately 265 locations in 4 states. The company buys overstock and closeout items directly from manufacturers. Also offered are fresh produce and meat. Some consumers have complained that Grocery Outlet sells items that are at or just past their expiration dates. CEO’s state that these dates are usually “best if eaten before” and not “will go bad by” dates. All items are pulled 7 days after their expiration dates.

The company was acquired by Hellman & Friedman, LLC, in 2014, but is operated by the Read family.

In June 2019, the company announced its plans to go public on the NASDAQ. There are currently 300 locations in 6 states. The company has frequently been referred to as the “TJ MAXX” of grocery stores.

Foods Co was founded in 1977 in California. The company is owned by Food 4 Less, which in turn in owned by Kroger. In northern California, Kroger does not own the rights to the Food 4 Less name, so it operates under the Food Co name.

The company operates a chain of no frills ,warehouse type of grocery store, where customers do their own loading, unloading, and bagging of groceries. Customers save money by buying some items in bulk form, such as nuts and beans, and by foregoing fancy fixtures and “pretty” stores, as well as by bagging their own groceries, rather than relying on baggers.

Foods Co store layouts greatly resemble Food 4 Less in that there are frequently disorganized aisles with actively working forklifts moving pallets. Many, however, feel that this is well worth the lower food prices. Company headquarters are located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 1986, the idea of no-frills, warehouse-type supermarkets was a unique concept. Rather than spend money making stores look pretty, Piccinini believed that people would be willing to give up fancy storefronts to save serious money on groceries. Today, the company has more than 52 stores in California and Nevada, operating under the Food Maxx, Food 4 Less, MaxxValue, Lucky, and Save Mart names.

In 2007, the company acquired numerous Albertson’s stores in the San Francisco and Sacramento, California, area and changed them to Lucky or Save Mart names.

In December 2022, the company announced that it would offer a “tamale central” in select stores.
