King Kullen was founded by Michael Cullen in 1930. While working for Kroger, Cullen had a different type of idea about how grocery stores should work and that they should be much, much larger. He wrote up his ideas in a letter and sent them to the Kroger corporate office, but his letter went unanswered. Disappointed, he resigned and moved his family to Long Island, where he would start his own grocery business.
Today, King Kullen has more than 32 locations in and around the Long Island/New York area. The company states that they offer “semi-service”, meaning that cheaper prices can be obtained when customers do most of the work themselves. Stores still offer deli service and a bakery, along with full-service pharmacies. In 2007, the company had annual revenue of $800 million.
The company has moved headquarters over the years as they have grown, with the current location being in Bethpage, New York.
