Bob’s Discount Furniture can trace its roots back to 1976 when Bob Kaufman began selling waterbeds due to his own back problems. By 1991, the bottom fell out of the waterbed industry, so Kaufman teamed up with Gene Rosenberg to buy a furniture store that had gone bankrupt.

Today, the company has more than 84 locations in and around New England. The company is best known for its whacky and humorous TV commercials, as well as for the cafes which are located inside each store. In 2016, the company had annual revenue of $1.1 billion. The company operates as a subsidiary of Bain Capital.

Bob’s Discount Furniture has “outlet” locations (oftentimes part of the warehouse inside the store) where imperfect furniture and appliances are sold. Other names the company goes by are BoboPedic ZZZoom and Bob’s Value Express.

In March 2021, the company opened their 6th store in Ohio.

Grandson’s of Tatelman speculate that their grandfather simply pulled the company name out of a hat, as the origin is unknown.

The company is best known for their springtime advertising stunts, which generally include some feat performed by the Boston Red Sox. In 2007, the company offered a full refund on certain pieces of furniture if the Red Sox won the world series. Company headquarters are located in East Taunton, Massachusetts.

The company began renting an upstairs room in an old creamery, offering discounts on new furniture, as well as an eclectic mix of used, antique, and handmade items. In July of 2017, the company purchased a 118 year old building know as The Cotton Mill in Jefferson, Georgia. This “new” location will house dozens of mini-stores, similar to a mall setting, with franchises selling their home goods and furniture items.

With the purchase of the new building, the company is changing their name to The Cotton Mill. In addition to the Jefferson store, the company has 69 franchised locations in 19 states and 4 in Canada. Headquarters are located in Jefferson, Georgia.
