Oscar Mayer Corporate Office

Oscar Mayer was founded in 1883 in Chicago, Illinois, by brothers Oscar and Gottfried Mayer. The brothers were butchers who opened their own shop and sold bratwurst at the County Fair. The company grew quickly, and by 1904, had 43 employees. Oscar Mayer was the first company to volunteer for the federal meat inspection program in 1906.

The company continues to sell meat and cold cut products, such as hot dogs, ham, and bacon. Kraft Heinz acquired the company in 1989. Oscar Mayer is often remembered due to their popular commercials in the 1960’s  and early 1970’s, which featured a song that included the name, as well as the company’s ” Wienermobile”, which is a car with a huge hot dog perched on top. This item was also a toy offered inside packages of hot dogs in the 1960’s.

In June 2002, the company agreed to pay OSHA a fine of $211,000 following the death of a worker due to an ammonia release. The company also agreed to conduct a safety training of all employees. 

Today, Oscar Mayer has more than 1,650 employees. The company maintains a corporate office in Madison, Wisconsin.

The company is the second largest chain in the greater Chicago area, only just behind Portillo’s. From a single Chicago restaurant, the company has grown to more than 158 locations in 12 states and is actively expanding. The company is best known for its Chicago style, thin crust pizzas, and calzones.

The company makes its own sausage from its Chicago plant and almost all items are made from scratch at each location. Rosati’s Pizza is still family owned and operated, with the great-grandson of Sam Rosati operating his own location.

In April 2023, a court ordered Rosati’s to repay $250,000 in back pay and damages to employees.

Bruster’s Ice Cream was founded by Bruce Reed in 1989. Reed learned the restaurant business by helping out his father, who owned a diner in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania. The company’s first location was next door to his parent’s diner.

Today, the company has franchises in more than 20 states and recently opened their first international restaurant in South Korea. All ice cream and frozen yogurt is made by hand at each location. Waffle cones and other treats are also made at the site. Ice cream is made on site to prevent the formation of ice crystals.

Bruster’s Ice Cream has more than 170 flavors, along with a number of seasonal flavors, such as gingerbread and peach. A few Bruster’s franchises also operate as Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog franchises, selling both items from one location.

Original Tommy’s Burgers, commonly known as Tommy Burger, was founded in downtown Los Angeles, California, in 1946 by Tom Koulax.  The original location is still in business as of this writing. Tommy Burger operates a chain of fast food-style burger restaurants in California and Nevada.

Today, the company has 34 locations in two states. The company is famous for making burgers and French fries topped with chili as a standard item. Koulax’s chili recipe tops just about everything made on the menu, including breakfast sandwiches.

The company is so well-known and popular in the greater Los Angeles area that there are dozens of copycat restaurants. 

Tommy Burgers is still owned and operated by members of the Koulax family.

After having headquarters in Glendale, California, for many years, the company recently moved its corporate office to Monrovia, California.

Grote didn’t want just any pizza business, he wanted the best in the industry. McDonald’s purchased the company in 1999 with the idea of getting into the pizza business, but this did not work out. Grote and his daughter Jane repurchased most of the restaurants from McDonald’s.

Today, Donatos Pizza has 200 locations in 8 states. It is best known for its “loaded edge to edge” pizzas, especially for the pepperoni pizzas, which have a minimum of 100 slices of pepperoni per pizza. The company has also introduced submarine sandwiches, salads, and chicken wings.

Donatos Pizza was part of Undercover Boss in an episode which aired in October of 2013. The company is still owned and operated by the Grote family and has headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.
