Quest Nutrition was founded by Ron Penna, Mike Osborn, and Tom Bilyeu, software industry veterans who grew frustrated that nutrition bars on the market were loaded with sugar. Penna’s wife Shannan, then a fitness trainer, made nutrition bars without sugar and with truly healthy ingredients.

The founders faced a huge obstacle when they could not find an industrial machine that could make the bars without sugar, which was needed to help the bars slide easily through the machine. They ended up having to reengineer the equipment, a time that the founders now describe as the “birth of the Quest spirit.”

Today the company engineers, manufactures, and markets healthy snacks made of truly nutritious and natural ingredients.

Fred’s opened its first discount store in Coldwater, Mississippi in 1947.

Today Fred’s serves customers with moderate or fixed incomes with stores in small and medium-sized towns across the Southeast and parts of the Midwest. The chain is made up of more than 700 stores in 15 states in total. About half of Fred’s stores have full-service pharmacies.

Stores carry more than 12,000 products, including brand-name, off-brand, and private label products including health and beauty, household goods, clothing, linens, food, and paper supplies.

Post Foods was founded by C. W. Post in 1895. The company’s first product was a cereal beverage, followed by its first cereal, Grape-Nuts, and Post Toasties. In its original advertising, Grape-Nuts claimed to cure appendicitis.

Post Foods changed its name to General Foods Company after acquiring Jell-O gelatin, Baker’s chocolate, and Maxwell House coffee in the 1920’s.

In 1985 Phillip Morris Companies acquired General Foods, and merged it with Kraft Foods in 1989. In 2007 Kraft spun-off Post Cereals and merged it with Ralcorp Holdings, naming the new company Post Foods.

Today Post Foods makes Grape-Nuts, Honey Bunches of Oats, Raisin Bran, Shredded Wheat, Alpha-Bits, Pebbles, Bran Flakes, and Toasties. The company is the third-largest cereal maker in the United States after Kellogg and General Mills.
