Founded by Kenneth Woolley in 1977, Extra Space Storage has evolved into a real estate investment trust that invests in self-storage units.
Extra Space rents a variety of storage spaces, including boat and RV storage, climate-controlled self-storage units, and spaces for commercial business storage needs.
As of September 2022, the company owned and/or operated 2,327 locations in 41 states, and Washington, D.C. comprising approximately 175.1 million square feet of net rentable space in 1.6 million storage units.
That makes Extra Space Storage the 2nd largest owner of self-storage units in the United States.
The company is listed on the NYSE under the ticker symbol EXR. The stock increased nearly 5 percent the week of January 11th.
Some experts say that self-storage values are a good indicator of how the housing market is doing.
