Today Fred’s serves customers with moderate or fixed incomes with stores in small and medium-sized towns across the Southeast and parts of the Midwest. The chain is made up of more than 700 stores in 15 states in total. About half of Fred’s stores have full-service pharmacies.

Stores carry more than 12,000 products, including brand-name, off-brand, and private label products including health and beauty, household goods, clothing, linens, food, and paper supplies.

General Growth Properties Corporate Office

General Growth Properties was founded as General Management by brothers Martin and Matthew Bucksbaum in 1954 when they opened their first shopping center, Town & Country Shopping Center, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The company opened its second center, Duck Creek Plaza, in Bettendorf, Iowa in 1960.

In 1970 General Management changed its name to General Growth Properties (GGP). The company went public two years later.

Today GGP is the United States’ #2 mall operator behind Simon Property Group. The company is a Real-Estate Trust (REIT) with a portfolio of 120 regional shopping malls which have about 25 million square feet retail space.

Top mall tenants include L Brands, Abercrombie & Fitch, The Gap, and Foot Locker.

The company grew by acquisitions, including Palais Royal, Bealls, and Fashion Bar in 1992. Fashion Bar had 71 stores, some of which were specialty stores named Stage Stores.

SRI kept the name of Stage Stores after the acquisition.

Today Stage Stores operates 835 stores in 40 states, mostly in rural areas. The stores are operated under the names Peebles, Bealls, Stage, Palais Royal, and Goody’s Family Clothing.

The retailer sells apparel, accessories, footwear, and cosmetics. Big national brands such as Levi Strauss and Ralph Lauren are sold in the stores.

The Bon-Ton was founded in 1898 when Max Grumbacher and his father, Samuel, opened S. Grumbacher & Son, a one-room dry goods store and millinery in York, Pennsylvania.

The store grew and in 1929 the company was incorporated as S. Grumbacher & Son, Inc. Max’s son, Max Samuel, joined the family business two years later in 1931.

Bon-Ton opened a second store in Hanover, Pennsylvania, 1946.

The company started to expand more rapidly when it acquired Eyerly’s in Haggerstown, Maryland in 1948 and McMeen’s in Lewistown, Pennsylvania in 1956.

Today The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. is a chain of 275 department stores which are operated under seven nameplates including Bon-Ton, Elder-Beerman, and Carson Pirie Scott.

The stores sell name-brand and private-label women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing.

Brothers Joseph and Lyman G. Bloomingdale opened their first shop in 1872 at 938 Third Avenue in New York City.

At the time the Upper East Side of Manhattan was a working-class neighborhood with shantytowns, garbage dumps, and stockyards. Within a few years of the store opening the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened, Central Park was finished, and the Lexington Avenue line started construction, all of which brought wealthier customers to the neighborhood.

In 1886 the store moved to its current location at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue. This was the center of the horse-drawn trolley system in New York and a convenient location for the store.

Today Bloomingdale’s is a chain of more than 35 upscale department stores and home stores in a dozen states. Bloomingdale’s is a subsidiary of Macy’s.

The Bloomingdale’s flagship store in New York City is a Manhattan institution and a tourist attraction.
