Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor founded their store in 1826 on Catherine Street in Manhattan, New York. The company originally sold women’s hosiery, cashmere shawls, and women’s clothing. The store moved several times over the years; to Broadway at Grand in 1861, the later to a cast iron building at Broadway and 20th Street. In 1914, the company moved, and made their headquarters, on 5th Avenue, the first store to open on what would become the infamous 5th Avenue. The company also made headlines when they appointed the first female to head a retail establishment in 1945, Dorothy Shaver.

Today, Lord & Taylor has grown to more than 50 locations across the U.S. Each store is uniquely designed and has a distinctive blend of both classical and contemporary elements.

Lord & Taylor offers luxury women’s clothing, handbags, shoes, belts, and accessories. The company offers personal shoppers, restaurants, and personal attention from sales associates.

NRDC Equity Partners purchased Lord & Taylor for $1.2 billion in 2006. In October of 2017, Rhone Capital purchased a minority share of Lord & Taylor. The iconic 5th Ave store was sold to office space sharing company WeWork, who will allow the company to operate through 2018, then has plans for revamping both the company and the building.

In August 2019, Lord and Taylor was sold to start up clothing rental company Le Tote for $100 million.

Gabriel Brothers (Gabe’s) Corporate Office

Gabriel Brothers, recently renamed as “Gabe’s” in 2013, was founded in 1961 in Morgantown, West Virginia. The company has 64 locations in 10 states, including Kentucky, Maryland, and Ohio. The company also owns 46 Rugged Warehouse locations in 9 other states including Delaware, North Carolina,Virginia, and in Pennsylvania.

The company offers designer brand name clothing for up to 70% off retail prices. Gabe’s also offers bedding and linens, clothing and shoes for men, women, and children, plus sized apparel,  handbags, wallets, accessories, cosmetics, beauty and bath products, fragrances, cookware, small home appliances, home decor, snack foods, small electronics, and housewares.

Gabriel Brothers recently announced that it will open a new 50,000 square foot store in the Charlottesville University area on University Drive. This enables the company to have fresh stock delivered to most locations every other day.

Despite the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, Gabe’s is continuing to open new store locations, such as the ones in New Castle, Pennslyvania. 

The company maintains a corporate office in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Lane Bryant was founded in 1901 by Lena Bryant, a dressmaker who was widowed when she was very young. Knowing she needed to support herself and her infant son, she borrowed $300 from her brother-in-law and opened a small shop on 5th Avenue in New York. A banker who handled her account misspelled her name as Lane and Lena left the name as it was.

Lena Bryant made the first ever maternity dress and thus began a career of making clothing for pregnant women and larger, plus sized women. By 1910, the company was making $50,000 a year.

Today, Lane Bryant has more than 800 locations in 46 states. The company also sells online and via mail order catalogs. The company specializes in larger women’s sizes from 14 to 28. Lane Bryant topped $1 billion in sales in 2014.

TJ Maxx was founded in 1976 by the Zayre department store chain.  Zayre was later sold to Ames and renamed to TJX Companies, Incorporated.

In 1994, the first European store opened in Bristol, called TK Maxx.

In 2007, development in Europe began to slow as the company started to focus on revamping existing stores.  Nonetheless, the first German store opened this year.

In 2008, the first central London location is opened. In March of 2009, the company launched its e-commerce site initially selling only womens handbags. The company later expanded their sales department to include most of the items that are sold in their retail locations.

TJ Maxx had $27.4 billion in revenue in 2014. The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol of TJX.

The company is still opening new locations, including one in Pottsville, Pennslyvania, in June 2021. 

In July 2021, a local San Antonio, Texas, TJ Maxx store donated pet food and pet beds to a food bank for the needy.
