The owner and current CEO of Pet Food Express, Mark Levy, was not allowed to have pets as he grew up, so he started his own dog walking business when he was 11.

In 1976, Levy owned a dog training business in San Francisco, California. He wanted to open a store that offered pet food, accessories, self-service pet washing stations, and dog training. Levy founded Pet Food Express in 1986. The company now has 61 stores throughout California.

The company does not sell pets from breeders but has placed more than 61,000 homeless cats and dogs to find new homes through their adoption program. Pet Food Express sells natural pet foods, and high-quality accessories, and states that they won’t sell anything they would not personally use on their pets.

Pet Food Express has inspired many other would-be pet store entrepreneurs.

Great Clips was originally founded as Super Clips in September of 1982 by Steve Lemmon and David Rubenzer, near the University of Minnesota. Lemmon and Rubenzer wanted to operate a no-frills type of hair cutting salon that would appeal to students and those who wanted a great haircut but did not want to pay for a fancy shop.

The company began offering franchises in late 1983. Great Clips has 3,700 locations across the U.S. and employs more than 30,000 hair stylists.  The company had $1.03 billion in revenue in 2013.

Due to the coronavirus, most Great Clips locations were forced to close, causing clients to find alternative methods for haircuts. Now that most salons can reopen, patrons are not returning to their usual routine. 

Great Clips is listed as #13 on the Entrepreneur list of Top Fastest Growing Franchises in America. The company offers veterans discounts off of their first store franchise fee and has third party sources to help cover start up costs, inventory, and equipment.

Hollywood Feed was founded in 1951. The company originally began as a feed and grain store for large farm animals, such as cows and horses. The company was also the main supplier of Purina products for the Memphis zoo. The company changed names from Hollywood Feed to Hollywood Pet Star in the early 1980’s. New owners, Shawn McGhee and family, changed the name back to the original name when they purchased the company in 2006.

Today, Hollywood Feed has 40 stores in 5 states. The company expects to open another 10 locations in 2016 and hopes to continue opening new stores at this rate each year. Hollywood feed stopped selling live animals in 2007, changing their focus to pet accessories and high quality, natural pet foods.

The company is also dedicated to selling items made in the U.S.A. One of their largest selling, non-food items, are Mississippi Pet Beds, which are made in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Mud Bay employs almost 300 persons, who also own private stock in the company.  The 5 lead executives are children and family of founder Elsa Wulff.

In addition to the usual cat and dog food, the company offers holistic approaches to common cat and dog problems that many pet owners face. The company states that they research every product they sell and that they always look for natural foods and other pet accessories whenever possible.
