Fannie May Corporate Office

Fannie May, which sells chocolate candies, was founded in 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, by H. Teller Archibald.  The recipes have never been altered, even when some ingredients were hard to find during WWII. After the war, the company grew substantially, with more than 50 store locations in the early 1950’s.

The company purchased their largest competitor, Fanny Farmer, in 1992, making the company, at the time, the largest chocolate producer in America. However, in 2002, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy. The company was ultimately purchased by 1-800-Flowers.Com in 2006 for $85 million.

Today, Fannie May operates in 7 states and Canada, with approximately 100 locations. In addition to chocolates, the company also sells coffee, gifts, and a wide range of other chocolate dipped foods including apples and strawberries.

In March 2017, Ferrero, maker of Nutella, acquired Fannie May for $115 million. 

In late 2020, Fannie May marked their 100th anniversary with newly remodeled stores. 

The company maintains a corporate office in Hudson, Ohio.

The company has 4 locations, with the most recent one opening in late 2015 in the downtown area of Los Angeles, on 8th and Grand Ave.

The company offers chicken wings with a variety of sauces, fried potatoes in numerous different styles, pizza, appetizers, sandwiches, chicken dishes, burgers, soups, and salads, as well as a variety of desserts. Happy Hour at all locations is from 3 to 7PM, and the beer selection is quite large, but varies on location.

Godiva Chocolatier, commonly known as Godiva Chocolates, was founded in 1926 by Joseph Draps, in Brussels, Belgium. The company opened its second location in Paris in 1958, but these premium chocolates did not reach the US until 1966.

The company was purchased by Campbell Soup in 1967, but was sold in 2007 to Yildiz Holdings, who also own Ulker, a Turkish food manufacturing company ,for $850 million.

Today, the company has 450 locations worldwide, with boxed chocolates sold in most upscale department stores, as well as 6 or more catalogs mailed within the US each year. The company also operates a website and takes telephone orders.

Breyer’s Ice Cream was founded in 1866 by William Breyer, who sold ice cream off of his horse and buggy cart in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The business was incorporated in 1908 and sold to National Dairy Products in 1926.

Today, the company operates as a subsidiary of Unilever Corporation. Up until 2006, the company was well known for producing the most natural type of ice cream possible, usually with nothing more than 3 or 4 ingredients. In order to cut costs, Unilever reformulated many of their most famous ice creams. Ingredient lists now can be as long as 40 items. In fact, many items have been reformulated so that they no longer contain enough cream and natural sugar to be called ice cream. These items are now sold as “frozen dairy desserts”

Breyer’s Ice Cream is frequently confused with another brand of ice cream called Dreyer’s, which is common on the West Coast of the US. Although the names are almost identical, they are two different companies.

Chevys Fresh Mex was founded in Alameda, California, by Warren Simmons in 1981. The company quickly expanded to 37 restaurants in the following decade and was purchased by PepsiCo in 1993.

The company purchased the Rio Bravo Cantina chain of Tex-Mex restaurants from Applebee’s in 1999, however, the chain did not do as well as expected. Chevys Fresh Mex filed for bankruptcy in 2003. In early 2005, the company was purchased by Real Mex Restaurants, Inc.

Today, the company has approximately 25 locations, most of them franchised. Chevys Fresh Mex sells a variety of Mexican-style food dishes in a casual dining atmosphere. The company receives about 70 percent of sales from its dinner menu.

In addition to restaurants, the company offers a line of prepackaged, multi-serve entrees for retailers, under the Real Mex label.

At least 14 underperforming Chevys Fresh Mex restaurants, mostly in northern California, were closed on December 26, 2016. Among these were the Redding, Chico, South Lake Tahoe, Modesto, and Fresno locations in California.
