In 2015, Julia Cheek was not feeling well and began a series of tests to try to determine the cause of her health problems. No one ever explained her test results and after spending 6 months and more than $2,000 in co-pays, she finally discovered that she had vitamin deficiencies and other issues.

Cheek decided that there had to be a better and less expensive way to have testing performed. In 2015, she founded EverlyWell. The company offers more than 30 test at home kits for everything from hormone to vitamin deficiency tests, metabolism and STD testing, as well as thyroid function and fertility tests.

The company received a $1 million line of credit after appearing on the popular television series Shark Tank in 2017. In 2017, the company recorded revenue of $6 million and in 2018, $20 million and is projected to hit the $50 million mark in 2019.

Cheek says that she encountered a lot of resistance at first since insurance companies cover the costs of these tests, but Cheek believes that people have a right to privacy and that those with no insurance or high deductibles, such as her case, will be interested in her product.

MTailor.Com Corporate Office

Bit Body, Inc., doing business as MTailor, was founded in 2012 by Miles Penn. The company offers tailor-made clothing using an app and a smartphone camera, to create a custom fit, tailored wardrobe for less than custom made clothing from brick and mortar retailers.

The company claims that the app is 20% more accurate than a physical tailor and that they offer 10,000 different combinations of suits and shirts.

Penn appeared on the popular television show Shark Tank in 2016, and was described by host Mark Cuban as “possibly the most arrogant person we’ve had on the show.” Unable to reach an agreement, Penn left the show disappointed but felt he did the right thing in turning down their offers.

MTailor began offering dress shirts for men but now offers a wide range of clothing options for both men and women.

Ancestry.Com Corporate Office

In 1990, two Brigham Young University students began tracking family tree information and making it available to other LDS members via floppy discs. By 1994, their original company, Infobases, was being sold on CD’s out of their cars. In 1995, these CD’s sold for $300. Ancestry.com took the business online in 1996.

While the company had been offering free access to Ancestry.com at LDS Family History Centers, that service was terminated on March 17, 2007, because the company and the LDS Church were unable to reach a mutually agreeable licensing agreement. In 2010, Ancestry restored access to its site at Family History Centers.

Today, Ancestry.Com is the largest for-profit genealogy company in the world, with revenue in 2015 of $683.1 million. As of late 2018, the company claims to provide access to approximately 10 billion historical records, have 3 million paying subscribers and to have sold at least 14 million DNA kits.

In 2012, the company was acquired by private equity group Permira Advisors for $1.6 billion.

Clients provide a sample of their DNA to the company for analysis. The company then uses DNA sequences to infer family relationships with other Ancestry DNA users and to provide what it calls an “ethnicity estimate”. Some people experience unexpected surprises, such as author Dani Shapiro, who found that the man she believed was her father actually wasn’t, and a Wisconsin man who discovered that he had 5 siblings, whom his mother had given up for adoption, he was unaware of.

Founded in 2016 by Derrick Ko, Euwyn Poon, and Zaizhuang Cheng, Spin began by renting dockless bicycles in the Seattle, Washington, area. The company logged more than 5,000 rides in their first week, far exceeding other bike rental companies. The company has evolved to include electric scooters.

Spin began offering scooter rentals/sharing in San Francisco, California, in early 2018 and in Texas in March 2017.

San Francisco Public Works confiscated dozens of the dockless bicycles after pedestrians stated that the bikes were blocking sidewalks and creating a hazard.

Ford Motor Company acquired the company in November of 2018 for an undisclosed sum. The company was worth approximately $90 billion at the time of sale. Ford says that they intend to greatly expand the company, which currently operates in 24 cities across the US.

In July 2021, the city of Seattle, Washington, gave Spin a permit to operate their scooters on city streets.

Righter Corporate Office

Citing discrimination on dating sites such as Tinder and Bumble, Christy Lawton decided to start her own dating app platform. Launched in late 2018, the app is slightly different than others in that women must initiate the conversation and men are not only expected to pay for the first date, but women are encouraged to report them on the app if they don’t.

Like most dating apps, a swipe left means you are not interested in a persons profile and a swipe right means that you are. Many profiles on Righter include the person’s personal and political views, as well as their pertinent information.

The app is very new, but some people have talked about how few people appear to be using the site. Founder and CEO Christy Lawton stated that there are thousands of users and she expected the selection of profiles to grow tremendously by the end of 2019.
