Marie Callender’s Corporate Office

Marie Callender’s began in the 1930’s when Marie Callender and her husband Cal, found it difficult to make ends meet. Marie began making pies and had her son, Don deliver them on his bicycle. Don Callender began selling his mother’s pies wholesale to restaurants in Orange County, California.

The first restaurant opened in 1948 and Don named it after his mother.

Today, Marie Callender’s has 74 locations, mostly in California, and a few locations in Mexico. The company offers mostly American cuisine, an extensive salad bar, and pies to be eaten at the restaurant or pies can be purchased at the front counter to go.

The company is also well-known for offering favorite meals and pies frozen in most major grocery stores.

The company filed for bankruptcy in June of 2011 and abruptly closed 31 low-performing locations. Bankruptcy proceedings finished under the control of Wayzata Investments Partners.

In February 2021, the company announced that it would need to raise prices due to the increase in wholesale prices of staples such as wheat and sugar.

Godfather’s Pizza was founded in 1973 by William Theisen in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is a privately owned chain of casual pizza restaurants. The first franchise occurred in 1974.  The chain was sold several times, including to Pillsbury in the 1980’s. Today, the company is privately owned by the current CEO Ron Gartlan.

Godfather’s Pizza offers the usual pizzas, breadsticks,  and pasta, but unlike many pizza chains, the company also offers an extensive salad bar and a buffet on weekends.

The company is known for its advertisements featuring imitations of Marlon Brando’s “godfather” character. Typical lines include “A pizza you can’t refuse” and “I know your neighborhood”.

On The Border Mexican Grill recently revamped its children’s menu and launched a new to-go lunch program that features $5 Burrito Boxes. Burrito Boxes come with a large meat-filled or vegan option burrito, fresh chips, and salsa. Shrimp burritos are available for an extra charge.

On April 24, 2014, the chain was once again sold to another private equity firm by the name of Argonne Capital Group

The company claims to be the world’s largest Tex-Mex casual dining chain in the world.

In February 2023, the company announced a new seafood menu with a crab fiesta plate.
