Boston Beer Company was founded in 1984 by Jim Koch and Rhonda Kallman. Koch came from a long line of family beer makers, so he set out to make a unique, American style beer. The original beer was Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The name comes from the Boston patriot Samuel Adams who, in addition to fighting for independence, was an avid beer brewer.

Today, the company is the second largest brewer in America, with $903 million in revenue in 2014, along with nearly 1,400 full time employees. The company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol: SAM in 1995. These shares have no voting rights, however, as the Boston Beer Company holds 10 percent of the Class B Common Stock shares.

In 2008, Koch began the Brewing the American Dream program, which has helped more than 4,000 entrepreneurs launch their dream of owning their own businesses.

Uno Chicago Grill, simply called Uno, was founded in 1943 by former Texas University football star Ike Sewell and friend Ric Riccardo. While the pair originally considered opening a Mexican restaurant, they changed their mind and created a pizza/Italian restaurant.

Franchising did not begin until 1980. As of 2014, the company had 140 locations in 24 states. The company also has franchises in 6 other countries, including South Korea, Honduras, and Pakistan. Strangely enough, the company has only 2 locations in the Chicago area. Massachusetts has the most Uno’s, with 27 locations.

In 2010, Uno Restaurant Holdings Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection and closed 16 locations. The company restructured its debt and emerged from bankruptcy in late 2010.

Yuengling Brewery Corporate Office

Yuengling Brewery, founded in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, is the oldest brewing company in America. It was founded by David Jungling, a German immigrant. He changed his name to Yuenling, thinking it sounded less German. The original company name was Eagle Brewery. The original location burned down in 1831, forcing the company to move to its current location.

As of 2011, the company was tied with the Boston Beer Company in sales. The company is still family owned and operated, with Richard Yuengling, Jr. as the 5th generation’s current owner and CEO. The company uses hops grown in Washington and corn from Minnesota for its products.

Yuengling Brewery offers 10 types of beer, discontinuing only two flavors in its history. Richard “Dick” Yuenling was the recent center of a controversy when he publicly stated that he supported Donald Trump for President in 2016. Boycotts of Yuengling products have been called for by numerous groups opposed to Trump’s candidacy.

Magic Hat Brewing Company was founded in 1994 in Burlington, Vermont. The company operates a micro-brewery and bar. The company acquired Pyramid Breweries in 2008 and grew from 64 employees to 129. In 2012, the company was purchased by Independent Brewers United, Inc.

The company offers 4 flavors of beer year round and another 4 flavors that are seasonal only and several other flavors that have been limited release only for a total of 40 beers at any given time. In addition to beer, the company sells T-shirts, hats, glassware, keychains, and tap handles with the company logo.

Goose Island Beer Company was founded in 1988 by current CEO John Hall after taking a trip around Europe. Hall liked the different beer flavors he found on his trip and decided that Americans who can’t go to Europe should be able to enjoy their beer.

The first brewpub was very small and was located in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The name comes from a nearby island. The company moved into a larger facility in 1995. A second location was opened 1999 in Wrigleyville. In 2011, Anheuser-Busch purchased the company.

The company offers tours of its brewing facility and boasts that they make more than 27 different flavored beers, although some are seasonal only items. The company has won more than 23 awards for their beers, including the 2010 World Beer Cup Bronze for Christmas Ale.
