Sleepy’s Corporate Office

Sleepy’s was founded in 1931 in New York by Louis Acker. The company operates a chain of mattress and bedding stores, mostly on the East coast. The company’s original name was Bedding Discount Center, but when the store became incorporated in 1957, the name was changed.

Sleepy’s was acquired by Mattress Firm in late 2016. All stores will soon be re-branded to Mattress Firm. The company has 1,000 locations.

In 2014, Sleepy’s was ranked last among the top 15 mattress retailers in Consumer Reports Magazine.

Simmons Bedding Company Corporate Office

Simmons Bedding was founded in 1870 when Zalmon Simmons opened his first factory. Simmons did not start off making mattresses, however, but  he started with telegraph insulators and boxes for cheese.  As repayment for a debt, someone gave Simmons the patent for bedsprings. By 1889, Simmons was manufacturing mattresses with built in bedsprings. Simmons is one of the oldest companies in the US.

Today, the company is best known for their Beauty Rest brand of mattresses. In 2013, the company had annual revenue of $1.228 billion, which puts Simmons in 3rd place among mattress sales. In 2012, both Serta and Simmons were acquired by the private equity group Advent International.

Simmons and Serta account for a 34 percent share of the mattress market in the US, however, there are currently no plans to combine the two companies.  Advent International maintains that the companies will maintain separate research, marketing, and developing departments.

Select Comfort was founded in 1987 in Plymouth, Minnesota, by Bob and JoAnn Walker. The company sells unique adjustable air mattresses and bedding.

As of 2011, the company has 23 patents for their product. Unlike other mattress manufacturers, Select Comfort sells only through their own stores, direct marketing, or via their eCommerce website.  The company is best known for their Sleep Number bed, which uses an adjustable air mattress so customers can control the firmness of the mattress. A memory foam topped Sleep Number bed was recently introduced.

There are currently 477 locations in the US and has more than 4,625 full time employees. The company is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol: SNBR. A competitor, Comfortaire, was acquired by Select Comfort in 2013.

In 2017, the company changed its name to Sleep Number. 

The company is known for its on-going support of the American Cancer Society. 

Company headquarters are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Serta is the number one selling brand of mattresses in the US. The company offers 3 different types of mattresses; the traditional spring mattress, a gel infused memory mattress, and the hybrid, which combines both spring and gel infused.

In 2015, Serta had annual revenue of $1.47 billion, an increase of 26.7% over 2014. Long time CEO Bob Sherman suddenly stepped down in late 2013. Current CEO of Serta Simmons Holdings,  Gary Fazio, has been appointed to the office.

Sleep Experts has 55 locations in Texas and employs more than 220 persons full time. In April of 2014, the company was acquired by Mattress Firm for $65 million. It is unknown if the company will retain the Sleep Experts name.
