As of 2005, the company had grown to more than 2,000 locations in the US and internationally. The company introduced a mobile phone app for frequent users to make reservations and cancellations easier. The Emerald Club is a loyalty program which enables customers to bypass the counter and choose any car designated as an Emerald Club Car.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, car rental companies, such as National, cut back on car inventory. In March 2021, the new demand for rental vehicles has now caused a backlog and outrageous price increases.

Alamo Rent a Car was founded in 1974 in Tampa, Florida. The company began by offering unlimited mileage, something that was out of the ordinary at the time. By 1982, the company had so many clients, they constructed a state of the art customer service center to speed up processing.

Today, Alamo Rent a Car is owned by Enterprise Holdings, the largest car rental company in America. The company launched the first online reservation and check-in system in 2005. Alamo offers airport service or has shuttles from all major airports to their offices. The company rates car sizes differently than other companies, calling many compact vehicles mid-size.

In and of itself, the company is the third largest car rental company in the United States with a fleet of more than 150,000 cars servicing 15 million travelers annually. Currently, the company has 148 locations in the United States and Canada and 275 international locations in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom

The company has been criticized for not only “renaming” car sizes, but also for renting cars that had outstanding recalls on them. Alamo is now offering hybrids, SUV’s, and vehicles designed for handicapped persons.

Rent-A-Wreck Corporate Office

Rent-A-Wreck was founded in 1968 in Los Angeles, California. The company began as a marketing idea, with used cars being rented in neighborhood locations, rather than airports. The company rents cars generally purchased used from other rental companies.

The name of the company caused many people to take a second look. Positive write ups in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, as well as interest by TV host Mike Wallace, gave the company plenty of free advertising. The first franchise came in 1973. Today, the company has franchised locations in 41 states. The company is best known for renting to younger persons and those with less than stellar credit.

Rent-A-Wreck is now owned by JJF Management, who acquired the company in 2006. Some locations now offer airport service, or airport pick up and delivery. The company recently started a wheelchair van rental program for the disabled.

In February 2018, a judge dismissed a bankruptcy claim by the company stating that the company was not bankrupt and that this was nothing more than creative bookkeeping.

Avis Rent a Car was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1948 by Warren Avis. Originally, Mr. Avis had only 3 cars and operated out of the Willow Run Airport.

Today, Avis is one of the largest car rental companies in the US and the largest for business travelers. Avis was the first car rental company to be located at an airport. The company is a subsidiary of the Avis Budget Group, which includes Budget Rent a Car and Budget Truck Rentals. In early 2013, the company acquired Zipcar for $491 million.

Avis stock is down 25% in the first half of 2018 due to competition from ride-sharing companies like Lyft and personal driving services like Uber. The CEO insists that car rentals are still popular, despite falling sales and stocks.

Headquarters are located in Parsippany, New Jersey. The company currently has more than 5,550 locations around the world, employs approximately 30,000 people, and has more than 373,000 cars worldwide. In 2015, the parent company had annual revenue of $8.5 billion.

In June 2022, a customer complained that the company overcharged him $4,000 saying that he had kept the car 10 days past the contract. When video surveillance proved that he didn’t overstay the contract, the company STILL refused to refund the extra charges.

The company operates a chain of car rental sites at most major US airports, as well as in Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, Iceland, Jamaica, Guam, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Saint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saint Lucia.

The company was started at the Los Angeles International airport by three friends who wanted to offer travelers a discount car rental service. The company started off with 6 new Nissan Sentras. There are now more than 20,000 vehicles, offices in 115 locations and in 33 countries around the world. The company is still privately owned and operated. In 2013, the company had annual revenue of $205 million.

Fox Rent a Car executives have stated that they have considered acquiring smaller rental companies, but haven’t yet found the “right” one. Company headquarters are still located in Los Angeles, near the airport.
