In 1962 Albemarle bought the Ethyl Corporation, a company more than ten times it size, in a $200 million deal. Ethyl Corporation was a manufacturer of a gasoline additive, tetraethyllead.
Today Albemarle is a specialty chemicals producer which develops, produces, and markets specialty chemicals for the automotive, consumer electronics, food safety, pharmaceutical, refining, and plastics industries.
