Modell’s Sporting Goods, frequently called Modell’s, was founded by Morris Modell in 1889, in Manhattan, New York. Modell’s is the 3rd oldest sporting goods company in America.
Modell’s is still a family-owned business, which today has more than 152 stores, mainly in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The company sells a wide range of sporting apparel, sporting equipment, shoes, hats, and other sports equipment.
The current CEO, Mitchell Modell, was featured on a television episode of Undercover Boss, which aired on November 2, 2012. A lawsuit has since been filed against Modell by their competitor Dick’s Sporting Goods. The lawsuit claims that Modell was using his Undercover Boss disguise to snoop around Dick’s Sporting Goods stores to learn their trade secrets.
Modell’s reported revenue in 2012 of $680 million.
In February 2020 the company announced that it intended to close 24 stores. However, in March 2020, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced that it would liquidate the inventory of its 134 remaining stores. The liquidation began on March 13, 2020, and all stores were closed by the end of August 2020.
The company still maintains an online e-commerce site.
Modell’s maintains a corporate office in New York, New York.

Previous comment about sneaker balls and customers with allergies

I frequently shop in the Deptford, NJ store. My visit this week ended very stressfully. I spoke with both the cashier RAY and the Manager TERRI with my concerns as well. Immediately upon approaching the register, my eyes began to burn and my tear ducts exploded. In addition, my nose began to run as well as I felt like my throats was closing. Apparently there is a marketing promotion for SNEAKER BALLS at the register, so there is an open sample on the counter. I know in most cases these are Corporate decisions. I would appreciate more consideration to customers, like myself that may be allergic. I won’t be able to return to Modells, assuming all stores have them. I have been a loyal customer for years! I’m the mother of two sons, and we most recently purchased MANY PHILA EAGLES SUPER BOWL Champion items for family in multiple states. Consider the customer first!
Thank You for your time and attention.

J. L. BRITTING: I read your email. My first question would be of course, where is the father of your child? File a claim against him for child support (You fail to mention) with the DA of your County and go after him for assests or anything else that can help your baby. Next: Where is your family? Why can’t you ask them for help. The problem is once we companies help one person everyone feels that they should help anyone who asks for help. Many corporations, like mine, donate privately to various charities that help people in your situation. There are charities. Finally, you might want to look somewhere else to live. Good luck. AS

Dear Modell’s,
I am a fairly frequent shopper with my family at the Modell’s store at 7201 Wisconsin Avenue Bethesda, MD, shopping for shoes with one of my boys. Today I noticed that NONE of the women’s athletic shoes are in boxes for customers to try on, although there are many boxes of men’s and kid’s shoes available. The manager told me that he was directed by the corporate office to NOT put out the women’s shoe boxes, and that this was so women could have “full customer service.” Shame on you. Women’s time is just as valuable as men’s and kid’s, and we do not want to wait for the time lag while someone brings our shoe size out. Please get the women’s shoe boxes back out again.
Sincerely,
Ellen Gadbois

I work with ppl with disabilities and was wonder if you could possibly make a donation to a young adult who has been wanting a pair of Jordan’s sneaker. I ask this because of his disabilities his sneakers are of 2 ( two ) different sizes per foot. He simply can not afford it and was hoping you could find it in your heart to help him. I work at the Are of Dutchess in Lagrange. He is not concerned if it’s the lastest one.
I would appreciate a response
I am a staff member who works with the people with disabilities.
Thank you in advance
