Sherwin Williams was founded in 1866 in Cleveland, Ohio by Henry Sherwin and Edwards Williams.  They initially sold pigments and painting supplies.

In 1877, the company developed the first re-sealable paint can.

In 1884, Percy Neyman was hired as a paint chemist, a first in the industry.

The company acquired several competitors in the early 1900s, including the Martin-Senour Company.

In 1920, the company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol: SHW.

sw 4

The company had financial issues in the 1970s but bounced back in the 80s and acquired rivals Dutch Boy and Dupli-Color.

In March of 2016, it was announced that Valspar would be acquired for $11.3 billion. The merger was finalized June 1st, 2017.

sw 3

In January of 2014, the Santa Clara County Superior Court ruled that Sherwin-Williams, along with ConAgra and NL Industries, were jointly and singularly liable for $1.15 billion, to be paid into a lead paint abatement fund to be used to remove lead paint from older housing units. The judge ruled that the paint companies manufactured, marketed, and sold lead paint without disclosing the health risks to the consumers in spite of “actual and constructive knowledge that it was harmful. In March 2014 Sherwin-Williams was denied a new trial. In February of 2018, the California Supreme Court denied the request for a review.

In July 2023, the company was surprised to find that a TikTok user gained 10 million views after painting their apartment in Pewter Green.

Today, Sherwin-Williams is a Fortune 500 company.  They manufacture, distribute, and sell paint, coatings and accessory products. In 2017, the company had annual revenue of 10.185 billion and employed more than 52,000 persons. Headquarters remain in Cleveland, Ohio.

My husband and I went to the Meadville Pa. Store this afternoon to get stain. We walked in and found the stain. We waited approximately 10 minutes and no one came to help us. In the mean time another couple came in. After no one came to help us, we started to leave ,and the woman of the other couple peeked her head into the office where a young man was sitting. She asked if we could get some help. He replied no he was on his lunch. I find this totally unacceptable. I know there was another woman working in the store. The least he could of done was find her so she could help both my husband and I and the other couple. We all left and went to Value Home Center. Please address this. I find his behavior ridiculous.

Sherwin Williams stain for my deck is terrible- we used cedar redwood and after drying 7 days- walking on it from our yard left dirt stains that do not wash off! Power wash doesn’t do it- we restrained again and waited 7-8 says- same thing- your Fenton Mo
Manager reviewed pictures and says it was painted- not stain- the records proof the stain from Sherwin Williams- manager said we have to get all the surface off and try again!! This is a new deck from May 2019-stained late August 2019- again in March 2020 to correct and again in April 2020! Sherwin Williams making point not to support product and now it will be a few thousand dollars to correct. At least credit me for 10 gallons of the cedar stain used in last 9 Months! Will never use or suggest this company if not corrected- your manager should at least come and review personally!

I manage 2 apartment complexes in York, PA. We have a national contract with Sherwin Williams for our painting supplies. We have been dealing with a store located in West York, PA. They can’t mix and match paint to save their lives. Even their computer has gotten paint colors messed up. RUSS is a terrible employee-very smart and cocky attitude. Charlotte is rarely there and the staff runs amuck.
I am going to start dealing with another location in York. This store is a joke.

I own a building, built for Sherwin Williams Corporation 35 Years ago here in West Helena, AR. Rent only increased a couple of times during those 35 years by 100.00 per month and even went down during one period. Statements were made on the lease each time (5 year periods) that rental rates would continue to increase. They always argued about it and got their way, threatening to pull out each time. Eventually, Sherwin Williams did pull out December of 2017, with 2 1/2 years still on the current contract. I was not allowed to have a key to MY empty building. I have been fine with this so far. The nearest key is 45 minutes away at another Sherwin Williams entity in Clarksdale, MS. Most people interested in purchasing my building don’t want to WAIT to see the building according to someone’s convenience in Clarksdale.
Twice, I have contacted Real estate Dept. in Atlanta, GA when I thought I might have a buyer for the building and have asked for a buyout of contract. When a buyer is ready, after almost a month I would call to find out what is the problem. I was told they were waiting on a controller to make the decision for them about it, which would save them money– ie. heat & air, minimum water bill, and 100% of rent. All the while, a potential buyer gets frustrated wanting to buy the building. I have lost both buyers waiting on Sherwin Williams to make a decision for buyout. The best reason I’ve gotten is SW doesn’t want to spend a large amount of money at one time for a buyout, all the while telling me how BIG S&W is, implying that money is not the issue.
Looks as if the store could have stayed open and lost money rather than continue to pay rent, electricity, and water. Employees there obviously had to be sent somewhere else to work. Could it be that the Real Estate Department is getting a commission off the incoming rent; therefore, being motivated to let the lease ride out? Totally frustrated, Mark Lynn 870-995-XXXX

    Dear Sirs
i believe the Store (Boegoeroei 85 D, Noord, AW 99999) unintentionally gave me the wrong color paint. I asked for ‘Aura’ color and told the sales person to check my purchase records in her system for the exact paint, having bought several gallons of ‘Aura’ in 2016. Although I bought the paint on 06/12/17, I only opened the 5 gallon container for use on 06/14/17. The following day 06/15/17 it appeared the 5 gallon container was not the ‘Aura’ I asked for. I immediately called the Store and went in this morning 06/16/17 to explain the mix up as I see it. The Sales Assistant was only able to sell me another 5 gallons of ‘Aura’, but not to credit me with the amount I initially paid for what we now know as the wrong color.
I expected Sherwin-Williams to be more proactive in this matter and to arrange credit towards this morning’s purchase. They were not.
    Kind Regards
    Everard Edoo

Your store on Jefferson in Chicago is always so understaffed. Got here at 7:35 this morning, it’s 9:30 now, and I’m still not out the door.
Only one person mixing paint and this is the main downtown supply center for downtown Chicago. Horrible wait times while one overworked employee struggles to keep up with a backlog of customers standing here. And this is typical. The front salesroom is a cluttered mess, piles of papers scattered everywhere, boxes empty and full spilling out, shelves cluttered with junk, just a depressing place. I’m certainly going to talk my clients out of specifying SW again.

I was wondering what type of vetting process is done on who sells Sherwin Williams Paints and products Why ? because the individual who is the distributor in the Cayman Islands is a convicted felon all his employees made up mostly of family members past and present are convicted felons for murder and drugs trafficking and even his son and ex policeman was jalied for corruption who run his store. Where Sherwin Williams should be concerned is this individual and his company KOOL Koteings cause he is so “Kool” was sued and convicted in the local Civil court, case number S0326/2013 in 2015 for watering down the paint to stretch it and painting and seal coating a condo and apartment complex only for it to flake and peel off shortly thereafter. His other despicable trick is to use the brand name pails of paint he gets from reputable companies to put his substandard mixture he creates and sell or charges customers full price for the name brand on the pail. This owner has even defaulted on the judgement and has even failed to pay his lawyer in the civil case on top of all of that he has ripped off numerous people including his last business partner. This is a very small place all Sherwin Williams had to do was ask around or google this guys name before they handed out this distributorship license to him and his company. The guy is also known for being quite nasty and violent when dealing with others who dare cross him thus his 16 year stint in the local prison. You must excuse me for not wriitng my full name for obvious reasons.

I can not believe that I keep calling the corporate office and I have no answer. One the truck drivers for Sherwin almost ran me and 2 other cars off the road because he wanted to turn while being in the middle lane, but it shows how little you care by the time and effort the company takes to keep communication between customers.

I was in a traffic accident with a SW van. the van was at fault & received a ticket. but,
SW is not claiming liability for this so, I had to go through my insurance to get my car fixed
& pay for the car to be towed and rental car not to mention loss of value on the vehicle.
I always thought of SW as a reputable company but that make me think other wise
I won’t be purchasing anything from them again

Bought my last paint at SW. I have a project to finish and only need an add’l qt of the color. Just found out that I can’t get a qt of SuperPaint Satin in a quart. Will be doing a color match at another paint store where I can buy a quart. When I called your I was told that your marketing division made the decision not to offer this paint in quarts. Why should I have to buy a full gallon to complete this project? Your marketing department is run by morons.

They have locked my account for one past due invoice in the amount of $116.
The next day they received payment in the amount of $300.18 and still would not re-open my account. They have made it impossible to work thing out. I will defiantly be changing paint companies to PP paints.

I work for this company and they wanna work you to the bone but don’t want to pay if a store make about 4 million a year and give their employees 2cents raise for hard work which put the millions in their pockets if it wasn’t for us anything to distribute to clients while the rest and sitting in the office bullXXXXXting all day talking about sports and answering phones and they get paid more than the warehouse workers with no problems with raises while we’re breaking our backs. And the district manager don’t give a damn about us we work in an unhealthy environment with alot of dust and probably asbestos to and all they care about is their pockets we have family to take care of but still under paid it’s like slavery days all again the only thing is the whip is missing

This is not the first time that it happens this is poor custumer service and it is not professional. I work for a big comercial company (williamsen and bleid) but I also do houses on the side. I thinking if this is affecting my business then I might have to take my business elsewhere. It is 9:00am one hour later and still closed I am out of here. You need to teach you eemployees how to be professional and responsible because some of us have to follow a schedule when we have people working for us.

What started like a scratch is now a huge spot the melted the finish. The box says nothing about the pen not being able to be used on the interior of my car. I am very upset about this situation.

Our firm has got contract for supply of Qty 7250 Ltrs DURAPLATE D301K paints (Euro Basic ES301K) to Pakistan Navy on the basis of your quote obtained by us from your UK office. Unfortunately, as I learned , you have taken corporate decision and not allowing supply of said paints for Pakistan. Reasons for such decision are not known to us but that is definitely going to ruin our business future. Pakistan Navy has standardised the paint for her ships and because of this decision of your head office may be compelling Pakistan Navy to look for some alternative and you will be loosing a customer for ever along with your goodwil. We still have a time margin of a few weeks in delivery period to fulfil our commitments with Pak Navy. We will be grateful if you can review your decision and allow your concerned dealing office in UK or Portugal for the supply of your paints for Pakistan Navy.

There have been times that I may be at a clients home and I may have a technical question or need pricing, even on a Sunday at 8:00 pm I can call my rep and he is there to help me “Thanks Moe “my home store is located in Miami Fl North Kendall Drive and 157 ave there is a lot of completion out here and everyone wants to sell you there product. I have had a couple of occasions when I have needed 20 gallons of paint mixed up 10 minutes before closing, because I just can’t stop in the morning to pick it up 7:00 am and they will have done it always with a smile, deliveries are on time and correct try that at the big Orange store or wait in line to get service, I want to thank the staff Moe, David, Albert, Karina and Willie you are great at what you do.

About a month and a half ago, I went into Sherwin Williams located at 8030 Phillips Hwy Ste 6 a Jacksonville Fl. 32256 to put in an application for a driving position with the company. I am well qualified for this position. I hold a Commercial Drivers License Class A with all the endorsements. I have also held several positions in the pass which included delivery, sale representative, customer service, and driving. I have good driving record and back ground. When I turn in my application, management made me feel as if I wasn’t qualified for the position. They made up a story about the fact that another manager that made all the decisions was out of town. I over heard a manager on the phone tell a friend or associate to come in the next day for the position. I feel like this is a company that doesn’t hire women. I will continue to complain until something is done about it. I don’t like the way I was treated…
