United Stationers was founded in 1922 as Utility Supply Company. In the 1930s the company published its first office products catalog and in 1937 opened its first retail store.
In the 1970’s United Stationers opened its first distribution center. This was such a success that the company decided to close its retail operations and operate exclusively as a wholesaler.
Today United Stationers is a leading distributor of office supplies and equipment in North America, offering 130,000 products to 25,000 customers.
In 2015, the company decided to rebrand itself as Essendant. The new ticker on the
NASDAQ is ESND.
The company’s main subsidiaries are United Stationers Supply (USS), Lagasse, and ORS Nasco.
