Ryan McQuaid had his fill of looking for local doctors and sitting in waiting rooms only to spend 10 minutes being seen by a doctor who is in a hurry to get to the next patient.
Dr. James Wantuck was also tired of being the doctor who was pushed to see more and more patients, including patients who could actually be helped with nothing more than a video call.
Out of these frustrations, PlushCare was formed in 2013. Dr. Wyntuck began by seeing patients via video call from the back office of his practice while Ryan handled the phone calls and made appointments.
The company used crowdfunding for startup funds and has since expanded its services to include Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
As of February 2016, the company received $8 million in Series A funding, enabling them to expand to 31 states.
PlushCare provides continuous access to board-certified, state-licensed physicians for non-emergency medical issues such as allergies, bronchitis, pink eye, sinus problems, and ear infection via audio-video technology for consultations regarding medical advice, diagnoses, and basic prescription medications.
The company gets excellent reviews from nearly everyone.
The company received an additional $23 million in Series B funding, enabling them to double their staff and fuel company growth.
During the coronavirus crisis in the early months of 2020, PlushCare saw a 70 percent increase in appointments.
The company maintains its corporate office in San Francisco, California.

My experience with this company was absolutely horrible and to add to this, I received a bill that was not explained to me until AFTER I was actually seen. I was not given an opportunity to decline services. This is a scam and extremely unethical. Your customer service is horrible. I would not recommend this company to my worse enemy! The only thing you can expect from this company is a surprise bill.

Formal Complaint:
Regarding Dr. Leonardo Vieira
Telehealth visit: 06/19/2021 at 6:45 am
Diagnosis: J32.9
To: CEO: Ryan McQuaid & CFO: Matt Nemer,
My name is Anton Davis. I understand you two are very important and busy…so this matter may not interest you. I had a telehealth visit this morning with Dr. Leonardo Vieira. I’d like to say, I chose him for my appointment because his photo was nice and inviting, however, I received the complete opposite care during my telehealth visit.
Sure, the doctor partially listened and wrote me a prescription, but I have a request I d like for you two to do for me. Would you please look at the video recording of our visit and let me know if it was just my imagination or was the doctor completely rude to me?
Not only was he frowning the whole time during our conversation (I am not saying I wanted to be entertained) but when I told him my symptoms or when I tried to describe the symptoms I am currently having, the comment he stated to me when frowning was “that’s not making any sense”.
I am writing you as a consumer. I am also writing to you as an individual who just happen to be a black male, of whom was mistreated during the visit I believe because of this. He treated me like a black male of whom he assumed does not want to work.
Besides something strong to knock this infection away, all I wanted was a doctors’ note so that I may continue to work remotely until I am better. Not only did he not acknowledge this, he was completely rude to me.
I wanted to submit a copy of the video recording to you however I am not technically savvy. I’d ask that you take-a-look on your spare time…or don’t. I just want to make sure, that how I felt or what I felt was genuine and if you were in the same situation you would have felt the same way too?
Id like to add, If Dr. Vieira strongly felt, I was trying to get a doctors’ note simply to avoid work or he had a nasty taste in his month because of my skin tone, he should have not answered the call. It would have been better that way.
I will give you time to respond prior to submitting the footage to my attorney and media.
PS
I would also like to point out…when I spoke to customer service, tears and all, they were apologetic and I was told this would be forwarded to the head doctor or manager of the doctors (I can’t remember the name of the management position but the person spoke of sound important) and that a complaint will be filed. I was also told the head doctor would write me a doctors note if Dr. Vieira refused. [This was via telephone. I called immediately to complain about what happed after the telehealth visit].
After I hung up, a few moments later… instead of getting a doctors note or a call back, I got a message on the Plushcare ap that Dr. Vieira is out of town till the June 22nd and if I want a doctors note id have to make an appt with another doctor to do so.
How could he be out of town if we just spoke moments ago?
If you need a copy of these messages, I can email a copy of them to you as well.
I really appreciate your time.
I am eagerly await your response.
Thank you!
Anton D Davis

I have experienced the same with Dr Jay Keystone. My experience has been a nightmare. I am a black female also. I don’t like to use the WORD black, because the word black has no legal standing. I think Jay Keystone is not competent. He needs to retire. He is stuck in the past. No more white sheets Jay Keystone. I’m off work for the murder of my nephew and he has refused to issue me a return to work letter with seven items stellantis requires on a return to work letter.
I’ve been off work since 3-4-22
The doctor took me off work for 2 weeks and every since the second week I have been trying to return to work!!!!
It’s been problem after problem.
The latest is the rtw letter was provided Friday, when I went to have the letter printed it came out shaded. So that it would look like a copy. Officedepot employee could not get the letter to print white.
He said it was purposely done when it was sent. I will cont the BBB next.
