The company was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1983. In 1986, the improved 4000PT model was launched at the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 2011 the latest version, the StepMill 5, was released at IHRSA in Los Angeles, CA with the technology of a touch screen console, iPod connectivity, and high-definition television.
The company went through a series of owners until 2010 when it was acquired by Core Fitness and Health.
StairMaster has become such a staple in gyms and home gymnasiums that the Smithsonian Magazine has noted its history in the January 2020 edition.
Stairmaster maintains a corporate office in Vancouver, Washington.
