SpartanNash History

SpartanNash is a food distributor and grocery chain.

The company was founded in 1917 as the Grand Rapids Wholesale Grocery Company. At first the company was a cooperative.

In 1957 Grand Rapids changed its name to Spartan Stores, Inc.

In the 1970’s Spartan changed from a cooperative to a for-profit company.

In 2013 Spartan merged with Nash Finch to form SpartanNash in a $1.3 billion deal.

Today the company operates 100 supermarkets under the brands Glen’s Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Market, and VG’s Grocery. SpartanNash also distributes 40,000 products to 400 supermarkets in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio from its distribution center in Michigan.

SpartanNash is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol SPTN, is #811 in the Fortune 1000, has 8,800 employees, and had $6.18 billion in revenue in 2013.

We are srs. Live in a area with no cell service. We are being penalized because we can’t “cluck” on your sales for coupons. They said I could stand and use the store computer be for I start shopping. ….you’ve got to be kidding! It takes me over an hour to run around to find what I need the way it is. I was given a card. Tell me why the system is set up so confusing? Why can’t you get the discounts by just giving the check out my card. Like Walgreens store. Simple to use. I am in Rapid City . Everyone I talk to is complaining about your coupns by using a cell phone!!!!

My name is Winnie Garza and I quit working for Family Fare on St. Pat street in Rapid City SD due to many things including my documented complaints about putting out expired food, management not doing their job & store director Wes talking down to me even saying do I expect him to take out trash, Doreen & Scott being a couple but still allowed to work close together, Wes letting S&A security do whatever they want even trying to tresspass me because of a personal matter between me and the security guard and turning a blind eye to the hands on force used I honestly feel I was targeted Because I continued to complain after being told by Wes to just do what I’m told I filed complaints with pictures and statements and nothing ever changed Spartannash needs to open their eyes to everything because I feel I was pushed to quit because of the flight or flight feeling I personally seen and heard comments about Drunk Indians and I laughed them off until I started to see the difference in how races were treated I asked Wes about things and he said have my attorney call him and he hung up what a horrible person and place to work prejudice is hidden just enough to keep corporate quite.

I could go in the store on any given day and find something expired. Last week it was ground turkey 9 days past its expiration. Guacamole 13 days past its expiration, pre
packaged ribs outdated. The turkey is a recurring problem. At first I would mention it to an employee but after find expired items again and again I brought to the Director of the store. He told me all meat gets checked every night before close. What a joke. When I showed him turkey 9 days past expiration he said nothing. One of the employees behind the meat counter said there are thousands of things in the store to keep track of and the manager agreed. He also that The company that owns family fresh made a policy about 2 yrs ago stating that meat can be on the shelf 1 day after expiration and he couldn’t do anything about it. Really??? I no longer call the store Family Fresh. I call it fairly fresh. I expect to hear from someone at this company. The manager did absolutely nothing.

You had the best meat department and Meat Manager in your Falls City Nebraska SunMart store. Your Manager had been there since he was a 16 year old teenager. We all know him. He knew what people wanted and he went the extra mile to make sure they got what they wanted. The Meat Department always looked nice and well stocked. He knows how to cut meat. Many people started to shop there again when he went back to work for SunMart. Until then the Meat Department was a mess. I spend anywhere from $800-$1000 a month is your store. I buy much of my meat in bulk. With your Meat Manager, Mr. Chapple, being gone and under the cirXXXXstance that your Store Manager, Ms. Propher made it too difficult for him to stay, I will not be shopping there any longer. Also your Produce Department is a disaster! Many time the bag lettuce has a disgusting brown liquid in the bottom of the bags. Try complaining to the Manager, or even find her in the store on a day your have a complaint about the Produce Department. It doesn’t do any good because she doesn’t care. This store needs this Meat Manager!!

while in your cheboygan store getting sandwich meat and other iteams i was hearing some very “colorfull language”from your staff,there was three girls working but it was the two heavy set girls that were speaking about someone in your bread department.Something too the affect of saying “why is that XXXXXX still here”,for one it sounded like these two were bullys by what i did hear and two why would you allow people like this work for you?I did bring this too the attention of someone by the name junella which i believe was management,this seemed at least to me was a mistake by a long shot She had the” look”of why you telling me this.This appears too have offended her by talking about these two,i guess moral principles that govern a person’s behavior doesn’t apply to any of these people.These two individuals seem like trouble the type that are nice too save themselves when needed but are really “ugly and confrontional”,it’s not like they have good customer service skills either,you ask and they roll their eyes like your bothering them.Amanda i belive her name is seems like she could care less about any custormer,this makes me sick to my stomach knowing that you allow this type of behavior in your company.In conclusion i feel that your management protects these two at all cost,maybe you should look closer when you hire someone or give permotions

Can someone from this company explain to me what the company standards for hiring a person is? I was interviewed drug tested DOT physical and everything else and then was told I was not hireable by this company because I did not meet the company’s standards. I was then told I would receive a letter explaining the reasoning it has been 3 weeks and I have not received a thing. But I’m pretty sure nobody’s going to respond to this so I’m just wasting my time.
