Fiverr was founded by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger in 2010. This pair came up with the idea of providing an online marketplace where buyers and sellers could meet but instead of selling items, they would buy and sell services.
Fiverr is an online marketplace for freelancers looking for work and employers who need temporary work performed. Services offered on the site include article writing and other writing services, translation, graphic design, video editing, and programming. Fiverr’s services start at US $5 and can go up to thousands of dollars with Gig Extras. Each service offered is called a “Gig”.
The website has grown more than 600% since 2011. The Fiverr marketplace is dominated by young adults, with only 2% of the sellers (freelancers) being over the age of 55. The company has stated that the rate of sellers aged 55–64 grew 375% at the end of the second quarter of 2015, compared with the year before.
Some Americans are using Fiverr as a side job and finding that it can pay better than Uber while allowing users much more control over their time and acceptance of jobs.
The company has been criticized for advertising that suggested that working excessive hours was acceptable and that you only needed to be concerned with “getting things done”.
The company is based in Israel but has a corporate office located in New York, New York.
