PPL Corporate Office

Pepco Holdings is an electricity holding company whose principal subsidiary is Potomac Electric Power Company.

Potomac Electric Power Company, known as Pepco, was founded in the 19th century as the principal subsidiary of the Washington Traction and Electric Company, a private streetcar company in Washington.

Surplus power was sold to other electric streetcar companies as well as to cable car companies.

The Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 forced the Washington Traction and Electric Company to divest itself of either its transport or power generation, and it chose to continue working as a power generation company.

In 2001 the company was reorganized and became a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings.

Today Pepco is a holding company for Conectiv Power Delivery, Potomac Electric Power (Pepco), Delmarva Power & Light, and Atlantic City Electricity. The company serves 1.8 million customers in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Washington D.C.
