The Fresh Market was founded in 1982 by Ray and Beverly Berry in Greensboro, North Carolina. This couple wanted to create a European style market that offered gourmet foods, not the usual rice and potatoes. The company now operates a chain of gourmet and specialty grocery stores across the US.
Today, the company has 159 locations in 27 states. The Fresh Market acquired Rice Epicurean Markets in 2012. The company went public on the NASDAQ in November of 2010 under the ticker symbol: TFM. However, the company went private again in April of 2016 when it was acquired by the private equity firm Apollo Global Management.
The Fresh Market had annual revenue in 2017 of $1.75 billion and more than 10,000 full time employees.
In November 2021, the Fresh Market agreed to carry all 4 coffee flavors offered by Buddy Brew.

The CEO of The Fresh Market is Richard A. Anicetti.
I HOPE THIS CEO, is DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THESE COMPLAINTS!
It starting to seem, that the company is not caring about its employees, OR its customers…
WE CARE ABOUT THIS STORE’S REPUTATION! We are hoping the Global CO. is too!

I am a former employee at your Fort Wayne, IN store. Let me preface this by saying I have worked in the grocery business for over 30 years, I have always liked this business. I fell in love with the fresh market 14 years ago in the Carmel, IN location. I have never just quit a job before in my life. I walked out of the Fresh Market the day after Christmas. I just do not understand how they can put managers in these stores who are not managers at all. I have never in my life been talked to the way that our store manager talked to me and almost every other employee in this store. He is unprofessional and acts as though he is above every one else. I get that he deserves a certain amount of respect because he is the manager, but there are limits to everything! He has come in stoned and had to be driven home, we have called corporate, they do nothing. He has called off more in the last year than I EVER have. He leaves early without communication to his staff. He has shown up late and left 8 to 10 employees sitting in the parking lot because he was supposed to open the store! Then in the afternoon when we are 2 hours behind for the day he wants to get on us because we aren’t getting enough done? When the Fresh Market opened their stores in Indiana 14 or 15 years ago, it was a great place to work, like anywhere else it had its challenges, but the way the company is run today is unbelievable! Over the last few years I have seen a steady decline in our customers and sales, partly due to the whole Apollo buy out and then we changed suppliers and that put us in a frenzy for a while, but largely I think it is due to management and the way they treat everyone. If they can treat their employees that way (we make money for you), then what makes you think they are treating their customers any differently? There are only so many times you can call and complain to someone at corporate and see no results until you start wondering if they care at all.

I too, have had a MAJOR problem with a store manager here in our area of Durham North Carolina that makes me sick!
I too, fell in love with the fresh market 4 months ago in Durham North Carolina…. there is so much to LOVE about this store and yet they hired A REALLY BAD manager, ANDY that has ruined it for everyone that works there!
THIS manager Andy, because of his RUDE remarks ended up making many GOOD employees in the past 6-8 months end of leaving!! Most of them are young so he knows how to intimidate them… HE IS A BULLY! and that is how bullies operate.
BUT NOW, just last NIGHT, he is talking about an older woman in bakery, who works super hard, and she IS very dependable, rarely ever takes a break, and is a quiet woman most of the time… always keeps the bakery clean and the window cases full.
AND THIS HORRIBLE MANAGER says to me last night – BTW, I am a regular employee, NOT in management, that he is going to “have a talk with her, that it may be her last night because she doesn’t do anything” !!! I said to him “What??” I said she is a very good worker!”
He says to me, that she always asks for others to help her… WHICH IS very few times she ever asks for help… many of us employees OFFER to help her with a few small tasks… such as myself, when it slows down, it makes sense to do something little for another great employee! WE do not mind at ALL, helping one another if we are able, because we are a TEAM, and we ALL do appreciate it when someone gives us a hand to close for the night.
She is over 70, and IS amazing of what she does!
I am SO ANGRY about this, that I will write now to the corporate office letting them know that if THIS manager is not removed soon, I will be going to the NEWSPAPERS, and let the city know of this horrible situation.
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME, that this manager has been a major problem. There have been within the past 6-8 months, many young people who have left because of this man and the way he talks so rudely to them AND intimidates them so that they end of leaving.
AND its very obvious WHY THIS STORE IS CONSTANTLY needing to hire more people!!
THIS MANAGER is making them leave and HE STILL is still doing it now!! Though I have been told by the MAIN MANAGER that he can not fire them, he isn’t able to do that…
I explained to this GOOD MAIN MANAGER, but HE IS DOING IT, by making employees upset that they leave! I DO NOT understand how this company lets these things go! I DO believe in THIS GOOD MANAGER to help with this situation, because he has always not only listened, but he CARES. I CAN SEE THAT… by his words and actions.
When I had a problem with THIS BAD MANAGER within the first two months I worked,
I went to the MAIN GOOD MANAGER, Brandon, and told him about ANDY’S behavior and what he was doing to me, and I am grateful that this manager Brandon, DOES CARE, however, after complaining to Brandon (MAIN MANAGER), about the BAD MANAGER ANDY, THIS bad manager started targeting me around the store saying things to me about something about my work, harassing me, AND THIS IS THE PROBLEM!!
I went back to Brandon (MAIN MANAGER) and said, YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY that these young people (GOOD WORKERS) are not coming to you about their complaints about ANDY (BAD MANAGER) is because he THEN starts targeting you because you complained!! HE did it to me already.
Back 6-8 months ago, another young girl working in the Floral Dept. had a problem also with THIS BAD MANAGER and she went to HR for help… all they did was say to her, “Maybe you misunderstood him” !!! SO THE GIRL LEFT! ARE KIDDING ME!! What is wrong with these people!
THIS HAS GOT TO STOP! THIS manager is destructive to Fresh Market BUT also ruining many people’s lives with his actions and words… I WILL GO TO THE NEWSPAPERS NEXT!
I just do not understand how they can put managers in these stores who are not managers at all. I have never in my life been talked to the way that our store manager talked to me and almost every other employee in this store. He is unprofessional and acts as though he is above every one else. I am 71 years of age and have purchased and cooked turkeys for many years. I purchased a turkey at the Fresh Market location in Suntree, Florida Christmas of 2019. That was the worse turkey I have ever had. It was tough and never fell of the bone like all of the turkeys I have previously cooked. When I said something to the gentleman in the meat counter he just said it was purchased from the same company where they purchase turkeys and just said I am sorry. Petty’s is closing this month and I am so sorry. I have never had a problem with the meats I purchased at Petty’s and the staff was always very friendly and helpful. Fresh Market needs to step it up. I complained once before about the staff in the meat department for not being very friendly.

I was in the So. Pines, N. C. store today. They were out of Panini sandwiches.
I asked if they could make more and they said once they run out they can not make more until the next day. I was very disappointed that they could not make 2. In Raleigh they made 2 for me several weeks ago. This was in the AM but I don’t see why they can not do this in the late afternoon.
Thank you

Susan M Phillips so how come Fresh Market responds to Frances’ question today (Saturday) but the manager at the Winston Salem, NC store said that no one in corporate or customer care was available to resolve my problem as no one except store managers and cashiers work on weekends?
Fresh Market says that all my gift cards are invalid as your company changed systems 6/1 and gift cards (which I bought in April and May) now show ZERO balance. In fact, when you call in to now check the balances – the message is to contact Fresh Market as provider cannot verify balances.
Kendra, the manager of the Winston Salem store, though said that although corporate sent an email about the fact that due top your 6/1 system change, gift card balances may not be available via calling in or through the cash register, that store management had not been empowered to fix this. She had been directed to tell the customers to call customer care – but customer care cannot be reached on weekends – so weekend shoppers who face this problem are s— out of luck. And even during the week, unless Fresh Market customer care can do the research and print out the associated receipt – then the customer loses all the value on their gift cards. The card I was attempting to use was bought 5/21 and charged to Chase Freedom ($200); my husband sent Kendra the Chase Freedom statement with that purchase but she said that wasn’t good enough and that unless customer care could find that receipt in their system – we are out $200.
Well, you can imagine how upset I was. And, when we attempted to use the 3 other gift cards ($100 each) that we have – they each show zero balance as well (both via the call in system and at the cash register). And even though we have the activation slips for the latter 3 cards – Kendra was unable to do anything to help us as this is a system problem and she said all she could do was write an email to corporate and ask them to call me first thing Monday morning. In the mean time, since my cards don’t work – I cannot buy the food I wanted (for my Sunday party) at Fresh Market.
I have informed our neighborhood via our HOA email of Fresh Market’s system issues and lack of weekend customer support (despite the fact that they’ve been aware since 6/1 that gift cards may not be recognized by the new system).
Please contact me immediately.

The company TFM uses Global Cash Card is the worst financial service company there is. They have literally stole over 500$ of my money. I have called customer service I’ve emailed even sent messages through FB. It’s a prepaid card therefor you can NOT spend or draw out more then what is on it. But at least $362 was taken out of my last check because they had my balance -$362 when my pay was loaded on to card. This is NOT possible. Please find a new company. I’m not the only person that has had these issues.

I cannot understand your decision not to build the planned store in Mt. Pleasant, SC – have you not done a market study which would confirm that the area is booming. It is in the Charleston, SC area which is the no. 1 travel destination by Conde Nast. Why would you have a store in Pawley’s Island but not one in Mt. Pleasant?? It makes no sense to me – it would be a terrible mistake not to capitalize on the market there.

I am extremely unhappy with recent changes. The store has been completely rearranged making it impossible to find anything. Whose idea was it to put the rice in three different places? My favorite brands have been discontinued. The pet products are gone. I look for cookies and I find laundry soap. I am so disoriented that I forget to buy half of the items on my grocery list. Is it that I forget or that I an so frustrated that I give up and leave. It is my understanding that the store manager has no control over these changes. That is the ultimate mistake. In a small market the manager know his customers. He knows which brands people expect to find on the shelf. Too many choices are not always a good thing. The store feels crowded and has lost its feeling of being a small local store. Please don’t become one of those giant corporate stores that I avoid. For 14 years I have exclusively shopped at The Fresh Market, but now I will be checking out your competitors. The employees have been like family to me, especially John, the store manager. I will miss them. I would like to receive a response. Please no BS about better serving the customer.

I have been going to your Fresh Market store in Kissimmee, Florida for about a year (almost every working day). Your staff is hospitality driven and always available to help me with a question. The prepared food is always excellent (I go there to pick up lunch). Everyone is especially conscience of the “customer experience”.
I would like to mentioned Tariq, who is always there to help. Happy , pleasant and professional.
Thanks for the excellent training with your staff at your Kissimmee, Florida store. You do deserve a 5 star rating!

I live right behind the Aventura, FL Fresh Market, on 18299 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura, FL, in the Commodore Plaza Condos..
I do not drive and I have a verycrippling arthritis. I often lean on one of the Fresh Market’s cart or wheel it to the Fresh Market Shopping Ctr., which abuts my condo property….I do not take the cart or steal it out of the shopping ctr.
My friend in the condo next door to me,Del Prado Condos, shops your store and spends a fortune there!…she wheeled the cart from Fresh Market to her condo gate….also in the same shopping ctr.
You have a very nasty, fresh, evil, mean “shopping cart XXXX” , an Indian or Pakistani guy (An FI/FP) and he threatened my friend with arrest, put up a note on the Del Prado corkboard saying he’d arrest/ prosecute anyone using the carts…well WTF are the carts for, especially if one spend a lot of money in your store??
Also your restrooms are a disgrace to the human race—-purely filthy, and the store smells bad, also we bought bad, tainted, old (and overpriced ) food.
Please clean up your act.
Fire that shmuck FI shopping cart XXXX!
Your CEO is Italian, Richard Anicetti, and so am I…shame on him!
The Italian Salute to you all !!

I am writing in frustration about a recent experience I had at Fresh Market. Let me preface this by saying that I am longtime (10+ years), frequent customer. I tend to shop at both the Sunrise (FL) and Cooper City (FL) locations interchangeably. Last week, I visited your Sunrise location in preparation to host a religious holiday dinner for my extended family. I spent $188.00 on that trip including 3 bottles of wine that were to be served at the dinner (as part of a religious tradition). As I unpacked the groceries, I immediately realized that your staff failed to remove the security lock on two of the bottles rendering them useless. That, in and of itself, caused me great peril that evening.
Today that peril boiled over. I visited the Cooper City location to do my regular shopping and took the opportunity to return the two bottles. Despite returning the wine in perfect condition with the original receipt in hand, Jeffrie, the Store Manager, refused to take back the unopened and locked wine. He insisted that he could not take the wine back because the Cooper City location did not sell that brand and did not have the devise to unlock the security lock. Furthermore, Jeffrie even indicated that he knew about this brand because he also works at the Sunrise location, where it was purchased. I explained to Jeffrie that the wine purchase was for a specific purpose and I no longer needed the wine. He continued to refuse assistance. Instead, he told me that despite the negligence on the part of your staff to remove the lock at the time of purchase, I would now be responsible to return the wine to the store in which I purchased it. I urged him to accommodate my request and take it to the Sunrise location himself, since he indicated he works there as well. I received an emphatic no once again. I am now forced to be inconvenienced again by your negligence.
This is not at all the experience that I have come to know from Fresh Market. There are certainly other food store options in South Florida that offer more convenient locations and lower prices, but I continue to go back to Fresh Market for its selection, quality and customer service. I now have to rethink that. There is no question that Publix, Whole Foods and the like would have handled this situation far more delicately and fairly.
I expect a response and a remedy.
Ray says
I have been shopping Fresh Market for several years, San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, fl. I llive in Fleming Island, Fl where you recently opened a new store. I was thrilled! But today7-27-17 my wife and I were shopping for dinner. We wanted green beans, they looked horrible! Limp and with brown spots. Squash, brown and old looking. We didn’t bother to look for meat after that. Also you are not running your Tuesday and Saturday specials on ground beef and boneless chicken breast, or your NY strip specials. What’s up with that? You get away from what made you special, you become just another grocery store!
Judy volpati says
I live in my Lebanon pa and shop at the local store ( I am told it is 138). I have been going there for 3 years now. I am upset by the quality of the people who work there. Many of my favorites have left, and there are only a few employees who care and go out of there way for you. I was appalled by what happened to me at this store recently. I was in shopping with my daughter, and was asking a question of an employee in the produce section. As he was explaining about the cotton candy grapes and melons, another employee started interrupting and leering army daughter ( she is very attractive and was wearing shorts at the time). This employee looked Like a panhandler, dirty disheveled, and full of tattoo’s. We were uncomfortable to be near him and started to move away, when he started to get very close to us and make strange talk, and actually followed us out of the produce section and chased us down to the bakery section which is 100 feet away. He kept talking to my daughter and would not take the hint to leave us alone. He really creeped us out, and I went back to the man I was talking to in produce. I asked what his problem was , and he apologized and said he has yelled at him about this behavior before, he creeps out customers and has harassed female employees. He suggested that i talk to the manager. As we were talking the creep started to come back, so my daughter wanted to leave. Yesterday I was going into the store, when this same employee was outside the store smoking and talking with other employee’s. He was dropping the most offensive language and f- bombs I have ever heard. He made racial slurs, and was absolutely disgusting. I just turned and left, other customers just stopped and looked at this cretin. He is not a young stupid teen or college kid, he is 55 or 60 something years old. He looks like a child molester, and after experiencing his behavior, I would not be surprised to find out he is a pedaphile. I understand good workers are hard to find, and I miss many of the people who left, and like the store and several of the employees who still work there, but why is this man allowed to work there. Children come into the store, he annoys, and creeps out the parents and children, he uses racial and vulgar language in front of customers. I feel very uncomfortable around him, and will probably shop at the new whole foods up the street to avoid him. Unless you do not care, and are content to loose customers you will investigate this and get rid of him. We can shop anyplace, we come here because we like it, not enough to tolerate this however. I am not interested in excuses or promises, I want to see action or we will shop elsewhere, and tell everyone we know to do the same. Understand this is not a threat, we deserve better, than this disgusting exhibition and disturbing shopping experience. I thank you for your time, but will not accept apologies on this, false promises, or ingenuously offered solicitation by letter , email, or phone. If you truly are devoted to customer satisfaction look into this and take action. I am sure you will be just as offended, angry, and disgusted with thus behavior. There are plenty of witness’s, to verify my statements. We will look for action or stop shopping at the fresh market, and tell everyone about the reasons for not shopping here. Very disappointed, we come here for a different experience, and don’ t mind paying a premium to get it. This just sickens me to see this, I expected better

Thank you for sharing this story. I think we all need to keep complaining about the bad experiences at THESE stores so the COMPANY will start doing something about all these complaints… MY NEXT step is to the newspapers!

I ‘m previous employed deli clerk at your Pensacola,Fl. branch. I’m having problems with harassment with one or more of Management in this store. Can someone contact me at 305-528-XXXXX text or call or email me at jurow_coleman at yahoo.com

I too, have had the SAME problem Jurow, here in Durham NC. SOME of these managers they hire should NEVER be managers. I have dealt with one ego-driven manager named ANDY since starting only 4 months ago! He is way out of line, and one employee contacted HR to get help and ALL THEY SAID to her was, “maybe you misunderstood him” — ???
THIS is horrible for the good employees to have to DEAL WITH THIS BS… that truly do great work and CARE about the store… MORE than the managers THIS COMPANY hires.
I WILL keep complaining until THIS is resolved and this manger here is either FIRED, or relocated… hopefully FIRED… no one should work under conditions of harassment or speaking RUDE to, EVER! I HOPE you get some results… because my next step IS THE NEWSPAPERS in our city!

Corporate: our local Fresh Markets are not carrying the yellow mustard potato salad any longer. I was informed at our Pineville location that it is not listed on their order forms and cannot get it. I am not a happy customer. I know that so many people loved that particular type of potato salad. I checked with our other location in the Promenade and same story. Would you please consider bringing it back. Would appreciate you looking into this.
Thank you, Mrs. gravender
