Yum! Brands was created in 1997 when PepsiCo spun-off its fast food division. The new company was named Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc and was the new owner and franchiser of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell brands worldwide.
Because of the company’s pre-existing relationship with PepsiCo, all brands have a lifetime contract with the company and do not serve Coca-Cola products.
In 2002 Tricon acquired Yorkshire Global Restaurants, owner of Long John Silver’s and A&W Restaurants for $320 million. The same year the company changed its name to Yum! Brands, Inc.
In 2003 Yum! launched WingStreet.
In 2011 Yum! sold Long John Silver’s to LJS Partners, LLC and A&W Restaurants to A Great American Brand LLC.
In 2003 Yum! acquired Little Sheep, a Chinese hot pot restaurant, condiment processing, and meat processing company with $2 billion in revenue, or 2% of all Chinese dining-out receipts, for $587 million.
Today Yum! is a Fortune 500 corporation, is a member of the S&P 500, is #201 in the Fortune 500, is #247 in the FT 500, has 75,500 employees, and had $13.08 billion in revenue in 2013.
