Warner Music Group (WMG) traces its roots to the creation of Warner Bros. Records in 1958 as a division of Warner Bros. Pictures. Warner Bros. Records was founded to prevent Warner Bros. Pictures’ actors from recording with other record labels as well as to cash in on the music business.
Warner Music Group was sold to Seven Arts Production in 1967. In two years the company was sold to Kinney National Company, which later changed its name to Warner Communications.
Today WMG is one of the world’s largest recording companies, ranking third in the United States according to market share. The company operates in two main segments: Recorded Music and Music Publishing.
The company holds more than 1 million copyrights to 65,000 songwriters. In 2011 WMG was acquired by Access Industries.
