The Tribune Media Company was founded in 1847 as The Tribune Company, which was founded to publish the Chicago Daily Tribune. The original newspaper was printed on a hand press and had a starting run of 400 copies.
Joseph Medill acquired an interest in the company in 1855 and gained full ownership in 1874. His two grandsons assumed leadership in 1911.
The company entered broadcasting in 1924 and television in 1948.
Today Tribune owns 42 TV stations in 30 markets, one cable network, a stake in the Food Network, online media properties, Tribune Studios, Tribune Digital Ventures, WGN-Radio, as well as real estate and other investments.
